Where are you seeing only 60-70k miles each way? A long haul business class flight like that is $5k+ (minimum) per ticket. I think you may accidentally be looking up the prices for economy.
60-70k miles is only like 800ish dollars. There is a 0% chance you can buy a long haul business class ticket for that cheap.
USDOT, sure - but airline redemption rates are different, so how does AA compare with Delta/AirFrance?
I’ve flown east coast to Paris, delta comfort, for 70k miles each way. There’s no way you’ll get business class for that rate.
Rising Star
Even if the chart is correct, that’s the bare minimum, airlines can charge whatever they so want with dynamic pricing. Best of luck, but you won’t find a J fare that low unless extremely flexible or last minute. Not to mention for 2 is even harder if not closer to impossible for certain routes.
1) are you booking through Air France or Delta? This matters as each will price the trip differently. Delta is exponentially more expensive to book than AF using points 2) if booking through Air France, they have an equivalent of saver fares which can be around 70k but they are not always available. You should use the calendar view on the Air France website to see what date this saver awards are available.
I did a quick check on my flying blue account. The lowest I see is 80k for business and that’s in November. You should monitor though because flyingblue does have sales where they offer reduced rates.
Airline awards have been super bad for the past year. You need extreme flexibility to book that low.
Delta in particular has moved to miles being worth ~1 cent/piece. It’s definitely still possible to get business class award seats for 60-70k miles each way on Star Alliance and sometimes oneworld but it needs to be the marginal/saver inventory not the “any seat” inventory you’re likely seeing. In fact, using ANA miles (an AMEX MR transfer partner at 1:1) a *roundtrip* business class ticket from the US to Europe on Star Alliance is 88k miles. If you want to give me dates, I can take a quick look.
Thanks, this is really helpful! I’m looking to fly Sept 4 - Sept 16, with flexibility depending on what’s cheaper. Some flights to Europe were cheaper on Sept 4 and some were more so I know it varies
