No, it’s not weird and you should connect with both recruiters and agencies and apply to positions you’re interested in. Creative circle is not exactly known for being the best in the business (search about it around the bowls) and staffing agencies in general prefer fast and easy placements with no relocation involved. They won’t be your best partners. Start with agency recruiters and reputable independent recruiters. Especially if you’re aiming at smaller markets (meaning not NYC), i think there is some expectation that they might have to relocate the right candidate. You’re not even that far. I’ve done coast to coast from and to major markets and i’m doing it again, and nobody’s batting an eye. As someone above said, let them know you’re looking to relocate and briefly explain why. Or ask, “if you’re willing to consider out of state/relocation, i’d love to chat”.
RTOP is looking for an AD in Philadelphia, check out their site, and looks like Arnold Boston is looking for creatives. Check out Elisha Goldstein’s Linkedin.

Problematic... Usually a company decides before the search whether they will consider out-of-state candidates, but not always. Sometimes they screen everyone in-state first, then if they aren't finding the level they want, opt to relocate someone. Look for postings that mention relocation, and always use the phrase "willing to relocate" in your cover letter. Don't use false address unless you are willing to pay your own way to interview and relocate yourself.

If the employer is in an area with plenty of talent to choose from, why would they shell out fly someone in to interview unless they were someone they had been targeting?

I’m doing an out of state search and am working with recruiters in the market I want to go to. Just be prepared to articulate why you want to move there, obviously.

Two obvious points - I’m more senior and in a role with less supply than demand [strategy].

And agree with the above - the company has to be willing to talk to not-local candidates. and some have. my recruiter is obviously upfront about my current location, desire to move, the cost, and timing. in the grand scheme of things, $10K in relo is a rounding error for the right candidate.

I did an out of state search several years ago when I was moving from Milwaukee to Minneapolis. I'm from Minnesota originally and my at the time fiance, now husband, was the reason I was coming back so that, and it being only 6 hours away, did make it easier. When possible, I mentioned that I was looking to move when applying and coordinated interviews around long weekends when I could visit my fiance. None of my interview expenses ended up being paid for, which in my case was fine, but I did get a job right before my moving "deadline."

I got flown out for 3 interviews before I landed a full-time gig. As long as you believe in your worth, apply to wherever you want and be upfront about your situation.

with creative circle (lol) and they wrote a nasty email back telling me to contact them when i actually live there. the listing didn’t say MUST be in this location. was that just an awful recruiter or is that the truth? i don’t want to lie and say i live there...

Here is my issue. I left my firm this summer for an opportunity I should have known was to good to be true. I realized it wasn’t what I was led to believe. Was able to return to my old firm. The return was “a favor”. But includes conditions. I am not happy, and need a change and honestly more money now rather than in 6-8 months. I knew it would be ruff when I went back but I didn’t expect it to be this ruff. Is my recent history gonna be a huge hurdle to even get an interview?

I have a dilemma. I lead a recruiting team in a consulting group and we are having trouble meeting our numbers. We are under pressure to deliver and we have been working together to make our numbers grow. Today I find out that one of the recruiters went to HR to say I have been pressuring them too much. I have a lead on my team who I discussed this with who doesn’t think there has been pressure at all. Suggestions ? I don’t know who the person is.
