Just got the Trek Checkpoint AL3. By far the best purchase I’ve made this year
BMC Teammachine all the way
Thank you A1!
I should have clarified in my post that I was looking at a flat bar. For some reasons, drop bars never worked out for me :(

I love the cannondale bad boy. I used to work at a bike shop. Still vividly remember getting that in the shop and how amazing the ride felt. It’s absolutely smooth, and they gave it a good set of components to allow you to do whatever you want on it.

I have a Trek FX, forget the number. Really love it. My SO has a Trek too that he’s had for years

I would personally splurge for an All City Super Professional Apex 1, $1500.
For under $1K I would go with the Surley Flat Bar Cross-Check.
Both have bombproof frames + reliable and low maintenance parts.
As for the ones you mentioned, I’ve owned 3 Treks (1990, 2009, 2018) and 1 Cannondale (2014). I still own 3 Treks and couldn’t get rid of my Cannondale fast enough.

Certainly a 100% personal preference. I owned a Slice 5 (upgraded cockpit, crank and wheels). Don’t get me wrong, it did exactly what it was supposed to do, go super fast, but I never felt comfortable on it (used for 2 seasons of tris). I also had a ton of problems with gearing (I know that’s more shimanos issue) but it’s also why I am team Sram these days. Treks geo probably just fit me better. FWIW I ride my steel frames way more than my carbons nowadays. Im probably just getting old and value comfort over speed.
Why not Cannondale?
