Never tell anyone your looking for a new role no matter how close you think you are with your team or boss
If you want the bonus, you should just suck it up and do the work. You can look for a new job during this time and let them know you can’t start until xx date. Do not tell your boss now, it will only hurt you and gives them time to badmouth you.
While investment banking doesn't seem like it at times, we're all adults. If you don't plan on staying it's better for you as well as the firm to know early. If you have a good relationship I funny believe there is any downside to being open and groom my experience I think they're are substantial benefits. When I was in IB and PE I let me teams know early of my plans to transition. It didn't impact my comp, have me cover to recruit and since I was a top performer my teams were always willing to make introductions and provide references.
Just to be clear - I would tell them after bonus hits my account next year (Feb).
@VP1 not sure if this was clear but goal would be to get out by summer next year so I wouldn’t be entitled to receive a 2021 bonus in Feb 2022 hence why I think the smaller workload is justifiable - I’m not working for a bonus. Even if I left in Dec next year I would forfeit my 2021 bonus given they are determined in Jan.
My plan would be to join a potential client so it would be in the interest of the MDs to maintain a good relationship and also why telling them early may help me as they might refer me.
I realize this wasn’t clear in my original post but my intent was to tell them AFTER my 2020 bonus clears and hits my account. In Feb 2021. Wouldn’t tell them now.
