I’m very frustrated because I’ve been interviewing with companies for 6-8 months to only be rejected at the final round consistently.

I have lots of relevant experience and I articulate it well but they don’t think it’s a “fit” for them. Finance firms are the only ones that interview me, can’t break into other industries. I feel trapped in my current role and everything is taking a huge toll on my mental health.

Does anyone have tips on how to manage this?

Im completely in your same shoes, I've been at it for the last 2 years. I think it's wise once you feel very depleted to just take a break for job searching and from life (take a vacation) because it's difficult.

I’m having the same issue but with entry level jobs. I have even started asking for feedback but haven’t gotten a response.

I’ve decided to slow down and not hope for too much. It’s honestly hurt when I go through these long interview processes to be rejected at the finish line.

Something will come up, you might have to adjust your expectations a bit.

like

I try not to get sour when I ask for feedback and don't get it, but it is hard. Especially when you've made it to the end of the process and you know there likely weren't hundreds of others asking for the same thing. Just give me some advice!

My only advice is to stay in contact with the recruiters at the firms that you have interviewed with. If you made it through to final interviews, you obviously have some skills/experience that are appealing to them, but probably lost out to a candidate in a close decision.

The recruiters can help guide you to other roles that may work out in your favor.

Lastly, don’t stop your job search in Q4. The candidate pool is smaller because fewer people are looking during Nov/Dec especially. So statistically, you have a better chance to get hired!

I think it’s a question of what you’re applying to and how your resume looks too. If you’re not getting enough bites it could be that the two don’t have synergies. You need to make sure that your work experience or recently completed degree shows how your skills can be applied elsewhere or how your training will make you the best for this new chapter.

What about your resume shows a desire to exit and be outside the finance bubble? As a more junior person it might be helpful to include outside activities that demonstrate your well rounded and applicable skills.

And how have your articulated in the past interviews that finance is not for you?

Network and network too. What industries are you trying to move into and what have you done to learn or engage more?

Perhaps consulting is an option too. Easier to exit into it from Finance and give the size of some firms it could be a stepping stone to later experience in an area of higher interest that you can then leverage to exit into your desired industry.

like

It could be that there’s conflicts for the roles to which you’re applying? I would think work arounds could be me made, but perhaps it’s something else. I know you’re not OP, but does any of the above resonate? Perhaps there’s also something in the way you articulate your skills? You’re getting in the door with resumes/referrals. Maybe have a friend/mentor do a mock interview with you and record it so that you can get a sense of how you’re doing.

like

You have to fake it till you make it, unfortunately. Ooze positivity even if it’s not there. No one wants to hire someone who is blah and perhaps (idk) that’s showing in the interviews. So they like your skill set but it’s not a “fit” cause you’re giving off a vibe?

like

I’m an optimist by nature and I’m true to it in my interviews! It could potentially be the other way around, meaning they like my energy but need different skills?

I would not apply for any job without a referral. You can get referrals on here for most places.

Also make sure your LinkedIn has open to work flipped on. You can hide people from your current company.

No good company would take the time to explain why they did not give an offer. That is not their job. They should not be rude in declining it but they are not going to walk you through how to get the job. They are busy filling hundreds of rolls.

I would recommend looking deeply and considering why it has not panned out on the last step. Is it truly just your skills? Is it how you come across? Is it asking for too much money? Too high of salary expectations? Arrogance?

I’m happy to chat with anybody and discuss if they are willing to be open about it. Hopefully we can brainstorm and it will help.

I completely feel for you as I’m in the same situation. I was burned out last month and was going to break down after being so close each time. Ended up taking a break from job searching and now feel much better despite having a toxic manager that’s still trying to make my life miserable (but still no job). It’s important to take a step back and a break for your own well-being and then go back to the search . Good luck with everything 🫡

I would question what you’re saying in the final round of interviews. It’s obviously not your resume or lack of skills/experience if you’re getting that far.

I am in the same boat.

I’m in the same boat too. Interviewing with lots of firms and getting through multiple rounds and not getting called in the end. Very frustrating.

I was in the same boat (finally received an offer yesterday). I had actually given up and stopped looking for a while. I spent a lot of time updating my LinkedIn and a recruiter reached out to me for this role. I also highly recommend networking and using references if you have them.

Every interview is practice. I am a perfect fit applicant for most positions I apply for on paper and get interviews. However, even for me it took interviewing for several positions, before I was able to land position.

1. You should have a good idea of what your going to get asked. Prepare for those questions.

2. A lot of firms don't have a structured process, so interview often depends on what a person thinks of you rather than if you can do the job. Remember these people have to evaluate if your going to be their coworker for months, so their impression is from their few minutes.

3. Recognize it may not be you, but the market. Nearly every tech company has frozen hiring and is talking layoffs. Those layoffs will come from contract workers, junior employees and perceived low performers. The same is true in banking, many job functions have soft freeze in place and hiring will ramp up more in the risk side.

Hello Fishers

I am in the middle of an interview, HR round is tomorrow.
The new company is asking me to finalize the last working day, in order to schedule HR interview round.

But I already experienced a situation where they ask me to carry on reliving formalities before issuing Offer letter, and later backs out, not issued offer letter.

My question is
What is right for me to do now
Ask for Offer letter, and tell them only after receiving offer letter, I can proceed reliving formalities?

Am considering a move to Bain (from MB) - I work in the PE Group and do a ton of diligence. My logic is higher compensation, better benefits and that Bain has a more established PE practice so that gives me a stronger platform for a sustainable long term career where I don’t have to balance PE work with strategic work to be seen as successful.

Currently only downside I see is having to rebuild my network.

I’d love some sounding boards on if this makes sense or if I’m missing something
