Social Strategy

I’m very interested in getting into social strategy— but how do I go about it?? I am currently a digital product manager, so I have a solid Understanding of the current digital landscape. Suggestions?

Product management seems so hard to break into, and interesting, why would you want to switch? Truly curious. There are a lot of cons to social strategy in my opinion. You have to stay on top of the platforms, which are ever-changing. They can flip a switch and suddenly all the rules change. But you have to know the nuances of the best practices for each channel, not to mention the specs for creative development. As a social strategist, you often don’t get a seat at the table with developing the bigger picture strategy that is more directly tied to business goals. It can quickly become extremely tactical. That being said, I love and appreciate a good social strategist, because they make my job a lot easier.

Grass is always greener, I suppose. Product Strategy seems a lot more stable and lucrative in the long run.

I made a personal blog to prove I can grow my own social following — you probably don’t need to do this (I came from a non-marketing background) but you will learn A TON!

Start learning whatever tools you can get your hands on. Depending on how big your agency is or if you have friends in certain departments, ask them to walk you through some of the tools and their capabilities. At my agency, we've found it to be really beneficial when people outside of the strategy/digital department have a basic understanding of the tools we use (so they're not clueless in front of clients and for new biz purposes) so we offer up monthly lunch and learns for account and creative teams. Maybe use that rationale as a pitch to your current agency? Also, Try to schedule calls with vendors to learn about and look at the tools. Utilize some of the free resources that are put out by the big companies. Facebook has a massive library of educational tools and classes. Twitter has a few as well. I started in social strategy, and moved into digital when the opportunity presented itself to learn about the full ecosystem of digital properties and how social can/should enhance a brands total online presence. Social is just one element, but I've found it both mentally stimulating and great for job security when I can recommend bigger picture ideas to transform brands digitally and not just social content.

I ask, in part, because I was in the running for a project assignment for which the AX liked my overall experience and capabilities. However, I didn’t have any experience with Sprinklr and they didn’t have time to ramp me up... 😞
