I’m wondering what Accenture is actually doing. Is it more like a Big 4 Firm, doing theoretical consulting things. Or is it more a IT-Service/ Outsourcing company like Connection, Atos, Bechtle, etc. doing hands on technical things? Where is the main focus on?

It’s more mature as a consultancy and comparable to Deloitte given their decades of continuous experience in consulting. Accenture touches basically every area of consulting from strategy to outsourced technology management. They are heavy on technology including SAP, Oracle, Microsoft, AWS, Google, etc. It is doing theoretical consulting like Big4 but also tangible operations and IT delivery.

No, Accenture and Deloitte have long competed with each other across multiple areas of their segments and continue to. I partner with both firms and they are the besr and most comparable SI’s I work with.

There isn’t one focus.

Accenture does everything. Half a million people, some of them moderate Facebook photos, others advise on M&A, and in between you’ve got literally any IT and backoffice activity anyone could possibly want to pay for. What unites us all is the new purple template and the memory of Pierre’s accent in training videos.

We’re a vertically integrated professional services firm. We do Strategy of all types with different acquisitions, change. We do implementation and have tech partnerships and business groups and JVs, we do analytics and marketing and design (worlds largest ad agency). We do business process outsourcing with call centers and doc processing, web content monitoring.

It is increasingly difficult to describe using traditional boxes what Accenture does. Think about it, it’s definitely one of the large outsourcing companies, but also the largest agency in the world, makes quite significant revenues from more traditional industry consulting, just launched a 3+B cloud first consulting / delivery horizontal to drive cloud-driven business and IT transformation and on the side it has deep industrial skills across consulting and delivery in its Industry X.0 and several specialty consulting and strategy arms many of whom have distinction in their industry. Beyond that Accenture drives a lot through partnership across industry and tech players. At its core Accenture definitely has technology heritage and it certainly still does a robust business of outsourcing, but the days where it was predominantly an outsourcer passed a while ago. The only thing it is not is an accounting firm.

like

Accenture does all of the above, but not any audit/accounting services, like Big 4. If you really want details, just look at the latest quarterly report or earnings transcript. ACN’s revenue is about equally split between consulting and outsourcing. There’re tech services in both consulting and outsourcing lines. Strategy is strictly on the consulting side.

The latter 100%

When I was switching from D I had a few options and Accenture was one of them. They paid very well (I used their offer to leverage my B4 offers) and seemed to have good benefits but this “unknown” of what Accenture does was what ultimately held me back. I’m in tech consulting/IAM so I think they do well there, I just didn’t want to unknowingly become a Wipro resource or something stupid so I stuck with B4. I think in another year or two I’ll give Accenture another look, hopefully will understand more about what they do/who they are in the IAM & tech space

As an ex-accenture. I think that is exactly what would have happened to you. Next time around try to get into strategy to avoid, the firm is doubling down on implementations and the such so good to avoid the tech side.
