If I’m going to be gone for an hour or less I just block my calendar. If it will be longer I give my boss the heads up. If it’s 3 hours or longer I request the time off.
I wouldnt no. Seems to me like you are doing the right thing and what any normal working parent does to handle the constant juggle. As long as you are getting the job done, that's what matters most
No unless your work is the type where coverage is important (ie help desk or POC for escalations that are time sensitive).
My team usually just pings in our group chat that we will be out for about x amount of time for whatever reason.
For example, I’ll be out for about an hour while I take my daughter to the dentist.
I’d say if it’s for a few hours, I’d send an IM or maybe an email but also let them know you signed on early to make up an hour and will use your lunch for another hour. But I think once you hit 3 hours you should likely consider a half day (if that’s their preference). Depends on your manager and if they trust you to be working professionals and make up the time during the week. Most managers seem to be fine but I did once have a manager who was a complete pain in the a$$ so any time away he expected PTO to be used.
