I’m working as an associate at a mid-size firm of about 140 attorneys, but was just offered a position with an AM 100 as a staff attorney with the possible bump to associate within a year. Is this a good move? Billable hours and salary are the same the first year. Any advice is appreciated!

Bad move. Why not wait for a tenure track position at a different firm? Should be easy considering market

One possible explanation is that your credentials don’t meet their hiring standards so they want you to prove yourself before being made an associate, which in many firms is a much more prestigious position than staff attorney. I haven’t heard of this but it’s the only reason I can think of why they would propose this arrangement. If that’s the situation I would have a frank discussion with them about your real prospects for advancement and the work they want you to do as an SA. Our SAs do only doc review. If that’s your future I can’t imagine them moving you up. But if they convince you that the opportunity is genuine it might be worth the risk.

The downside is that many firms look at SAs as a completely different job than associate. That being so, moving to SA may limit your opportunity to return to associate at another firm.

At my firm it’s a small group and a lot so get promoted to associate within a year or two. You do the same work as a reg associate including drafting. They said it’s an HR thing, but either way I saw it as staff atty at top 20 firm > associate at a firm no one would ever know, advancement wise. Also apparently it’s a lot easier to lateral to an associate position at other big firms, but I don’t know for sure.

like

I’m still a staff attorney (I just started recently), but from the others in my group it looks like anywhere from 6 months-1.5 years.

I recently made this exact same move except I moved from a smaller firm to a V20. Feel free to DM me if you want.

like

When I made the move I tripled my salary and it was a no brainer, so I can’t really say whether it’s worth 35k difference. For me, it really boiled down to, no matter what Staff Attorney at very known V20 Firm > Associate at a firm no one knows and only has ~5-10 attorneys and I hated it anyway. So far my experience has been great and resources and training are unmatched. I’m exactly like an associate, the only thing that’s happened so far is I’m not sure if I’m getting the special covid bonus.

To the Europeans that claimed that America is a laughing stock earlier - Europe's energy dependency rate has risen to 58% (as of 2018), mostly dependent on fossil fuels from Russia. The US now exports more energy than imports (as of 2019).

The US and Canada are now uniquely positioned in the world to aggressively expand renewables without sacrificing energy independence. Probably won't have to manufacture renewables in parts of the world that rely heavily on energy sources like coal too.
