Imagine your firm region leader bowing out on you right during the middle of a huge client proposal that your team has been working on for months and then citing afterward there is “more to life than winning client work” and that it’s OK to sit out some of the biggest client proposals due to mental health…

I just can’t see how deep down her teammates actually support her in this stunt.

For some context for those who don’t know much about gymnastics In this thread. Simone stated she was lost on the beam. For people who might be confused by her wording, "getting lost" in gymnastics is used to refer to essentially getting split-second vertigo while flipping. Gymnasts generally always know where they are relative to the ground, it's how you know when to stop flipping or if you need to really crank that shit to make it on time. Getting lost means you don't have that awareness anymore and you're essentially guessing when you need to find the floor. It's absolutely terrifying. From other statements being made about this situation, it sounds like it was stress induced or some other mental issue which absolutely makes sense given the crushing pressure she's been under.

likehelpful

I thought you were speaking from experience and not that you were referencing the Olympics. Simone biles comparison? No way. No way no way no way. She is amazing, a lovely person, stayed there and cheered harder for her teammates than anyone, and is going to accomplish more in the future because she considered her mental health rather than ignoring it and (potentially) ending up in a hospital. You think you know better how important the Olympics are than an Olympic gold medalist who has been training day after day, for years? You think you're entitled to tell a black female athlete what to do with her body? YOU'RE NOT.

Guess you all don’t know what a panic attack feels like.

And to be even more clear here - when you’re having a confidence crisis as a gymnast it is incredibly dangerous. Bailing on a stunt or hesitating can be deadly.

I’m not really sure I understand this thread… are you trying to say she should “suck it up” or “walk it off”? Not saying that shouldn’t be an option but walking away should definitely ALWAYS be an option if needed. Always. Life and health are more important than anything and I support anyone who makes that very difficult decision.

Sounds like someone I'd like to work with as long they don't think that's a one-way street - meaning I could put my mental health before winning client work just like they did.

Such a boss move. Would love to try this once. That’s it - I’m out of here!!!

Agree 100% OP. I can't imagine Giannis/LeBron/Kobe doing this in the NBA finals, or Tom Brady doing this in the Superbowl. "Mental health issues"? It's called stress and anxiety. Everyone gets it when doing something difficult and important. If you're an elite athlete, you should have trained your mind as much as your body. The name on the front of the jersey is more important than the one on the back. You don't get to represent the US at the Olympic level only to quit because you're stressed. We look embarrassing.

EY4 sounds like he also tells people to “get off his lawn.”

“Going for the silver”🥈definition: when a team or individual prioritizes mental health over perfection⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ 🥈potential usage: ⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ - “Yeah. We could have stuck to that internal deadline. But considering the client submitted the documents late to us, we knew the most victorious choice was to go for the silver.”⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ - “If wining a gold medal is followed by a colleague committing suicide or entering rehab, we should go for the silver every time.”⁣⁣ ⁣⁣ - “Oh my god. Did you hear about Kate Spade? She appeared to be so accomplished and put together. Maybe she’d still be alive if she had gone for the silver instead of the gold.”⁣ ⁣ Shout out to Simon Biles for taking exquisite care of her inner world. Her choices wake us up to the social programming that’s taught us performance is more important than what our heart has to say. ⁣ ⁣

Or how about, I’m going to sit out the last week before filing for my mental health.

How is everyone organizing Jira? A project for each product or offering within a product or just a single backlog. The startup I work at have one backlog set up for the product but I find things get lost. The engineering team then have their own Jira projects where items from the product backlog get moved into it, refined, broken down into smaller tickets, and then scheduled into sprints. I can’t help but think this is hard to manage.
