Do you like working on gov’t? Because that’s what’s keeping most Vancouver offices a float these days.
If you want the best chance to get hired as an art director, come to Toronto.
There are dozens and dozens more agencies and clients here than in Vancouver.
Also, know that layoffs have been widespread in Toronto recently, so there is a lot of creative talent looking for work. Lots of competition for jobs right now.
That said, you don't have to settle right away. You can come to Toronto but still look for jobs in Vancouver.
US experience won’t hurt (and might help build your story)! Markets are considered similar enough that it’s treated pretty directly applicable experience (depending on where/kind of work you did state side)
Someone should tell you: it rains like 3 days a week in Vancouver.
Uggh I hate rain.. unless they are nice and soft drizzly that don't really bother you much.
The ad market is much larger in Toronto, as are salaries. If that’s what you’re after, go to Toronto.
If you want more opportunities for career growth (especially agency side), and enjoy the bustling city life - Toronto.
If you want more work/life balance and enjoy calmer, more naturesque environments - Vancouver.
A lot of people have thrived in both markets, just depends what you’re looking for.
Vancouver is great if you truly LOVE nature. Like if that’s the number one reason you get up every day. There’s lots of skiing, close to surfing, hiking, mountains, etc. But as a city it tends to feel smaller than it is - restaurants close early, for example.
Toronto feels more like a big city.
Both have pretty insane rent - but the cost of living in van is highest in Canada.
Living in van wasn’t for me. But some love it!
