Imposter Syndrome - help! I just got the best job offer of my life for a client side position. I’m talking a $30k raise. But it is a LOT more responsibility and I can’t help but feel insane imposter syndrome. They are putting a lot of faith in me for this role and it’s a brand new position internally so there is a lot of pressure to do well. It has me questioning all my qualifications… I recognize there are things I can bring to the table but there is a lot I have to learn in this role.

First off - congratulations! That’s incredible. Second - you’ve got this! They chose you. Remember that. They chose you because they believe you can do this; you need to believe you can too. The things you bring to the table? Great. Use those to boost your confidence. The things you still have to learn? That’s okay! Find ways to position that as opportunity. Rather than being jaded or stuck in the ruts of the current processes, you’re bringing a fresh perspective. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and ask why things are done a certain way. Frame the questions in a smart way, and as backup, if you’re worried about asking too many questions (no such thing, btw), provide context for why you’re asking. There’s a great business book that makes the case for why/how newbies can add the most value “Rookie Smarts: Why learning beats knowing in the new game of work” by Liz Wiseman. Check it out to amp yourself up some more. Stress less about what you don’t bring (or find ways to plug any key gaps you anticipate), and focus on areas where you excel. You’ve got this!

A man in your shoes would not give a second thought to this. Grab that opportunity and walk into it with the confidence of a mediocre middle aged white man!

You have to remember that the JD is rarely the actual JD. If we all saw the JD for our current role we’d all be shocked. The right company is not expecting you to nail everything on that list on your day 1. You’ll have time to learn and make your mark. I do have an imposter syndrome too and one thing I like to always remind myself is that this is new only for a few weeks. After that it becomes your new normal. You’ve got this!

Hold yourself up to your own standards and I guarantee you’ll outperform their expectations. They want you because you’re smart and qualified. Own it. You got this.

I echo everyone’s thoughts on this: it’s happened to me many times and the important thing to remember is your INNER confidence and resourcefulness. Everything you’ve done so far and all the experience you’ve gained has led up to this opportunity. You earned it ! A few tips: 1. A little bit of doubt is a good thing - it can be motivating, but Don’t let the voice in your head take over. Kick it out, put it in a box and lock it up. 2. There will be challenges. Embrace them. Approach challenges critically and objectively - and when you fail - treat it as a great learning. 3. Try not to project a lack of confidence (nerves and confidence are both infectious), if you appear confident, that will create confidence in others. but balance that and don’t be afraid to show some vulnerability or to admit when something could have gone differently. Accountability and ownership also builds confidence. 4. Finally, keep perspective and focus on relationships. The single biggest assets you can earn that will help you fit in and thrive, are trust and influence. You got this! Good luck and try to enjoy this moment rather than let doubt creep in to disturb your well earned opportunity!

If you have imposter syndrome, chances are you are more than up to the task.

This is something I read recently that really got me thinking about my imposter issues in positions I didn’t feel qualified for and it might help you as well. “If you have everything a job description is looking for, you are over qualified. The items that you feel you need to work on will give you drive to get there.” I’d never thought of it this way and it really helped me. Wishing you all the best, good luck!

I’ve been practicing for 6 years in-house at a media company (was a startup when I joined and is now more established), straight out of law school. Due to the small nature of our team (3 legal members), I have been involved in all areas of our business and even advise c-suite frequently about legal risks. I received a promotion, with another title bump on the horizon this year. I have an opportunity to go to a start-up media company as the sole attorney. Anyone else have experience doing this?
