In a background check can the company determine if I was let go or fired from a company? I was let go for “performance issues” but my snapshots and receiving severance/unemployment so do not agree.

Conventional wisdom says that these days companies are only going to disclose whether you worked for them and the dates. Any comment on character and / or reason for termination of the employment relationship could lead to civil litigation for defamation or similar claims. Even if the company would win, it's just not worth the risk or hassle.

Depending on how small your market is (either your location, or your specialty), they could know someone there and pick up the phone.

They can ask but most simply verify employment dates. Everyone knows right now that while the firm is using the performance excuse these are layoffs.

like

Even the most hardcore HR departments will verify employment dates, and yes/no on whether you are eligible for re-hire. If it's just performance/they couldn't afford you/job changed, etc... you should still be eligible for rehire. If they fired you for stealing, harassing people, etc., then you probably wouldn't be.

Typically HR will just confirm dates and the level you had when you left. At smaller firms things can be more lax, especially if you have a chatty rep who by some chance you offended in the past, but at larger firms they just don't want the potential legal headache. Make sure your references are on the same page as you though.

Thanks! I already give them my references and they said my references only said wonderful things about me

They call your previous employer and they can ask this question.

Thank you!

You can google the legal questions that HR can confirm in your state for an employment verification.

How do I know whether they are genuinely trying to promote me and can't, versus them stringing me along for as long as possible? Hey my ADHD peeps, serious question. I was diagnosed in my early 40s which explains A LOT of my life's failures (i.e. changing college majors, multiple job changes/getting fired, bad with time management). We are complete opposites and I think that telling him can possibly provide solace for both of us. Thoughts?

My firm was one of the firms that gave covid bonuses but did not specify whether everyone was getting it. I didn’t make my hours this year because I was on maternity leave and a bunch of my cases ended 1-2 months before I went out so I had lower hours before I started my leave. I couldn’t make up for those lost hours when I was back since I was working from home with an infant because of covid. I didn’t get the covid bonus, which in my mind is ironic considering the circumstances. (Cont.)
