Foster! It’s short term and you can work with the rescue on weeks you’re available or not (heavy workload, travel, etc). Fostering also makes it easier to let go - one of the ones around me says “goodbye is the goal”. You can help dozens of dogs :)
Also you’re absolutely right about it being a lot of work- I underestimated it. Fostering will help understand the effort! Eventually you may find a dog you absolutely love and can do a foster to adopt!
In this instance- you just have to keep reminding yourselves they’re not yours and they have a forever home. It’s impossible to not get attached but try and stay rooted in what’s realistic
Seconding fostering! Between that and dog sitting for friends when they are on vacation, I get my fill. It helped me realize I’m not quite ready to be a full time per parent, but having one a week or two a month is great!
See if there are any correctional facilities near you that have dog training programs with the inmates. Many have weekend programs to get the dogs used to the outside world. You get the dog for the weekend only.
Or what to do in such a situation? Should we just get one?

Think of yourselves as aunt/uncle - get a good fun time and then send back pupper to the parents for all the maintenance 😉
