Make sure to acknowledge his action as soon as you have a chance after the meeting. As others have said, few people do this and you need to make sure that you communicate how appreciative you are and of course how sorry you are to have put him in this position. Then need to have the conversation about how this happened and how to avoid a repeat. If he took the blame he for sure is someone who understands that shit happens and that the key is to learn from it!

OP I wasn't at the oscars nor did my work get my manager crapped on. I know your lashing out because of guilt. Grow up. Do your job right and put your phone away. I notice that you did not say you didn't have your phone out during the team meeting. Precisely my point. If you had a phone out posting to FB while your manager was getting shit on you are a problem. Millennials need to take responsibility. Did you got to the Sr Mgr to take that blame? A good manager take the flack a good staff owns up to the screw up. Did you?

That's the right way to manage. Y'all can talk about the mistake later, but props to your manager for being accountable for your work too. 👏

☝🏻agreed. Tell him you are appreciative of him covering you, and put processes in place to prevent this from happening again. That's a good manager.

like

100% be thankful for that

You're about to get the "I am not mad, just disappointed" talk.

You are the luckiest to have a manager like that. Usually managers throw people under the bus for their mistakes. Very rare to see someone other way round

like

I couldn't agree more. Frankly, I have never heard of this happening so be really glad that you are working for this person. Figure out how to not let it happen again in the future and work extra hard for them. Even though you made this mistake, you might want to considering working for this person long-term

Make sure you start the conversation about how to move forward and safeguard against whatever it is you did. Your mgr will appreciate that and it'll increase the likelihood she will go to bat for you again.

like

say thanks and that you appreciate what he/she did and that you will do everything you can to prevent the same mistake happening again. It will soften his/her anger towards you (if they're angry in the first place)

Never leave this manager :)

I apologized for the mistake and we proceeded to discuss other things on the agenda like normal

Ditto all previous comments.

I'm shocked so many people have either (1) managers that throw them under the bus or (2) are passive aggressive about a mistake afterwards.

This job is hard enough with the pressure we put on ourselves to be perfect. I hope everyone here can strive to have more of a one team attitude with people they manage.

That is a really good manager OP. A good one does not turn it into a "big deal". They move on.

P3, why don't you take your judgemental self and your bs opinions somewhere else? you don't even know the details. It's not like I was tweeting Emma Stone's picture and made hell of a blunder to compromise my firms image. Take a chill pill!

That is a great manager and I hope I do the same when I am an M. I had a manager do the same for me. She didn't even have to say anything I was so disappointed in myself and she could see that. Just don't make the same mistake twice and thank them.

In my opinion part of being a manager is managing people which means checking work/making sure work is done. If they did check your work and didn't catch the mistake or if they didn't check your work it's on them too. A good manager like yours understands they need to take heat for it too and they are also learning.

like

I actually think when managers throw people under the bus it makes them look worse than you. That said, the passive way I see managers do it is, "My fault for not checking your work."

Since like week 2 at the firm I've had a quote on a sticky note on my desktop from a training I saw "The key to success as a manager: when praise comes to your team, hand it off to your people; but when criticism comes, stand in front of them and be their shield. Deflect the praise and take the criticism, and they will do anything for you." Push myself every day to embody this when leading teams!
