☝🏻agreed. Tell him you are appreciative of him covering you, and put processes in place to prevent this from happening again. That's a good manager.
I couldn't agree more. Frankly, I have never heard of this happening so be really glad that you are working for this person. Figure out how to not let it happen again in the future and work extra hard for them. Even though you made this mistake, you might want to considering working for this person long-term
Do the same some day when you're a manager...
I'm pretty shocked how many people are saying this is rare in their experience. I really don't see it as rare - this isn't even a question of being a "nice" manager, but an effective one. Throwing your team under the bus rarely makes your partners/clients blame you less or respect you more (it can backfire even with them). And that's before even considering impact on the team. Your firms need to make better investments in training and developing managers.
You could have spoken up in the meeting and pointed out this was something you did. You could at least thank the manager later and thank him or her for giving you air cover. Stuff happens. More important is how you handle yourself afterward.
That's what managers are expected to do. But many managers lack this basic quality
How did the post team meeting convo go with your manager?
It is a strategic move as a manager to do that and a good one. As soon as you start associating deliverables/outcome with individuals on your team you give the client the ability to pick off (roll off) individual team members. That is a horrible way to manage team workload and morale. Everything should be a team effort with lead taking responsibility.
Exactly!
Well, I think the same. Looking forward to our interaction tomorrow. Hope it's still smooth going forward
^shitty and presumptive comment P3. You don't know that being on the phone had anything to do with this
Good leadership book I recommend for everyone: Extreme Ownership by Jocko Willink
Completely agree with O1. At the end of the day the team is the managers' responsibility, so blaming team member is just a lame excuse. We get a lot of credit when the whole team does a good job, so we should be prepared to take heat when the team makes a mistake
On the flip side, recognizing your manager's behavior is great, most of the people take things for granted. I have a subordinate whom I nominated for a very little work he did and the guy didn't even say thanks
When ppl me why I left PwC for Deloitte im going use this example. Never could put my finger on exactly what it was before, but this clicked with a recent experience on my first time working with a manager at D
OP I wasn't at the oscars nor did my work get my manager crapped on. I know your lashing out because of guilt. Grow up. Do your job right and put your phone away. I notice that you did not say you didn't have your phone out during the team meeting. Precisely my point. If you had a phone out posting to FB while your manager was getting shit on you are a problem. Millennials need to take responsibility. Did you got to the Sr Mgr to take that blame? A good manager take the flack a good staff owns up to the screw up. Did you?
I've yet to have a manager that would do that. Always protect your juniors. It's much more rewarding to work hard because you want your manager and the team to look good rather than working hard to avoid yourself looking bad
I feel bad for the manager...while he is taking shit for Bob, Bob is posting in fishbowl!
Not many people do this. In fact many managers pass the buck. What he did needs to be publicized.
That's a great manager you have, and you should show them how much you appreciate that and be there to back them up when they need you. Nice to hear there are still good managers out there!
It makes me sad how many do. I'm always surprised by what people try to get away with when it comes to dodging responsibility and accountability
Maybe you should put your phone away during meetings an not post on FB. Focus in the task at hand and fewer mistakes will happen that your manager has to cover. Be thankful for that manager.
