I'd discuss the aspect of the project that is delayed, if possible, rather than the colleague associated with it. You also don't want to look like you are unaware of what's going on with your project.
Not sure how to work this in now but at the time when he was pressing you, the way I try to handle it is to say "the wrong report was sent to me". I leave out the persons name and be generic as possible but still say what happened. At my company, they usually won't press for the name of who it was who did it.
You should have brought the reason why you had the delay. You could have said that a wrong report was sent to you without mentioning any names. But don't make it sound like you are making an excuse. Own up the mistake, apologize then reason out.
At this point, it is better to just own it. Get the project out and then have a talk with your boss. You will learn later in your career how to address these problems. Also, we need more people like you that care a lot about teammates.
Hey there! Why don't you tell your boss the cause behind the delay? You don't have to tell who caused it, just say it in a generalized manner.
The next time they ask just tell them that you'll follow it up with the team without disclosing who it is you'll be asking. But this could also make it appear as if you're unaware of what goes on around you so be sure to tell them that you've been keeping tabs on it.
Hmm. I with the comments above. The best you can do right now is to own it up. If the same thing happens in the future and the same employee caused it, I don't think you need to cover for him/her. Let him/her take responsibility.
I think you and your co-worker should discuss this first. Your co-worker should own it and hold himself accountable. If she refuses to do the right thing, you can now proceed to explain the whole thing to your boss.
