In a top Exec MBA program (M7, late 30s), want to signal that I’m open to job opportunities, but I’ve read on this app that a stating “Exec” MBA on LinkedIn signals less competence than FT MBA? Any truth to this?

The MBA at this point in your career is more of a check mark on your resume. Do you have a top 7, top 10, top 20 MBA....if yes - you can now be considered for a higher level role. Once more important at this point is were you able to show results in your day to day job and has your job performance (i.e. larger clients, better companies, greater job titles) improved since you got your MBA. The entire purpose of the Exec MBA is to show that you have the skills to accelerate your career...if you get the Exec MBA and don't do anything with it...that will show in your resume.

Btw...if salary is a proxy for how companies view your MBA. I have been one of the highests paid people in my role for the last 6 years (google and pre-google)

It’s kinda funny when people bring up the selectivity piece of exec mbas like it’s a diss. Ah ya no 💩 a higher percentage gets in. Only a select group of people are actually going to apply to an exec MBA at that stage of their career. Self selection is a real thing. Personally, I wouldn’t spend all that money on it, but I can’t knock those who do.

That’s BS. For hiring managers, Exec MBA is same as FT MBA because you are managing a FT job + MBA + most likely your family too (Majority of my cohort had a kid) => most hiring managers I’ve known saw Exec MBAs as being good at managing time, multitasking and burning the midnight oil. That said, I’ll tell you that in my experience, most of my target companies have cared more about the Tech work I have done as compared to my M7 MBA.

Where does part time stand in this lol

Just put MBA on your profile. Exec MBAs are less prestigious but not everyone is in the position to take two years out of their lives to go full-time. It won’t hamper your job search much at all.

For someone in late 30s who is already in a "businessesey" career, a traditional full time MBA from a top program makes little sense. Why would you want to hang out with a bunch of 25 year olds with 2-3 years of work experience? And why would a company want to hire a 38 year old with 15+ YoE into a recruiting class or management trainee program? Even a top part time program is a stretch at that age. Unless you are a total career/function changer (like an electrical engineer), standard post MBA exits aren't really the right fit. When I did my part time MBA in my early 30s, I didn't even consider OCR...MBA recruiting in my industry was for a title lower than the job I had at graduation. So that leaves the executive MBA. It is meant for people who already have relevant experience. It is done part time for a reason. Employers should know this. They aren't hiring a wide eyed MBA grad into a class of new associates, they are hiring an experienced worker who has shown a desire to polish their skills.

What does your diploma say? Mine says MBA. And if a company’s calls the school and asks…they will say MBA.

100 percent. A top 10 executive MBA is not even as competitive as a top 30 full time

like

This is laughable. I’m reading this post while seating in class (top 3 EMBA programs globally). Peers profiles include director-level and VPs at FANG, neurosurgeons, lawyers, MP at one of latam’s leading VCs, decorated special ops (active and retired), NGO board member, CEO of publicly traded company, highly successful entrepreneurs, etc. Look, class profile is totally different (at least 10-yr work experience); no one here came to start a career, but to take their leadership journey to the next level, and network (for a steep price tag). I’d argue most (if not all) in my class have “made it” in some form and they’re interested in exploring new paths. Full time MBAs sit at the beginning of the journey, and that’s great, but simply different goals

If you put MBA you may be misrepresenting yourself. An Executive MBA is not the same as an MBA.

I would add that W pre-screens candidates, so many people who would not get accepted, do not apply.

If your super prestigious rigorous FT-MBA needs to be defended on a meme-filled social media app instead of standing for itself or being supported by people making hiring decisions, it's probably not actually that important of a distinction

If the degree awarded says MBA, put MBA. The format shouldn’t matter only the piece of paper.

OP makes a post about reading that executive MBAs are incompetent and lower barrier of entry. Asks opinions. Disagrees with known fact and people chiming in reinforcing those points. Finds other executive MBA students who wasted the money and states merit of it. Makes sense….

like

GD1, where did you go?

like

Agreed. An EMBA is a format and how you got the degree not the degree you graduate with. I think there’s a general misconception an EMBA is a execution education degree so I would always market yourself with an MBA.

like

Also in my experience a part time MBA and EMBA are different. Many schools have part time for working professionals that are the same classes, same professors, same curriculum just at nights/on weekends. I have seen that EMBA programs are less rigorous (as others have mentioned) and are typically shorter in duration.

like

Executive, since that’s what the OP was asking about

like

Exec MBA here 🤷. Leave off exec.

You're already in the program so honestly it's irrelevant. I think the whole FT vs PT thing is bogus. Maybe people care while they are in b school. Just own it and be confident.
