Take this as a chance to prove yourself if your plan is to stay in the firm. It’s a perfect time to erase their concern if you already know what it is. In my last engagement I have a peer who said to be a lead senior, and that time I just joined the firm as experienced senior. She took a week PTO at the start of the engagement and then busy with another archive for another week. I took the chance to step up and set the tone, and later everybody saw me as a lead sr. My advice is it’s the least effort to think you are treated unfairly, but take a lot effort to think how to turn this into an opportunity. And you’ll get reward if you can always think the second way.

All depends on your goals. Make sure you talk with a coach or manager about why you were passed up, and if you want to stay with the company and if doing this engagement allows you to prove them wrong, then push through it. If you don’t care about being at that company anymore and think you’re senior material now, then go find a senior position somewhere else and get paid.

I second what D1 said, but I’ll also add a little sympathy here. Your situation happened to someone I know. I am sure it does feel unfair and frustrating and really discouraging. So maybe a few silver linings: - sometimes people don’t get promoted because someone truly feels they didn’t get enough experience before to succeed in the next role. They don’t want to set you up for failure. Now you’re on an engagement with another senior who can kind of “spot” you. That doesn’t mean they were right, but they may have been trying to be kind. But as D1 said, take this as an opportunity to set the tone and step up to the task. It will earn a lot of respect in people’s eyes that you were patient and professional in this situation that is tough on you. - sometimes this happens because we’re at the end of the day a bureaucracy too. Reviews are convoluted, different managers/mentors have different expectations, and we’re also in a challenging year with covid. Promotions may have been more limited than before. So don’t let this drag down your self-confidence. If it helps, pay raises will suck this year for anyone across the board, so you’re not getting hit as badly this year by not getting the promotion.

Thank you. It helps hearing these things. It is really hard to find the motivation to step it up and be a senior after not getting the promotion. I know I’m capable, but I’m just frustrated with it. This did motivate me to push through and prove I deserve it.

Continued, I feel stuck because I want to confront my career coach or manager about this, but I’m fearful it will make me look bad by doing so

I was told that I wasn’t ready to be a senior and wasn’t given much reasoning since I had good reviews at the associate level. But here I am senioring a complex engagement right after the fact
