5k is a small price to pay for your health.
If it costs you your peace it’s not worth it
I paid 5k to get out of a job I hated and I’ve never been happier. It taught me to be more critical about asking questions and uncovering risks during the hiring process
It may be worth exploring with your therapist if there is something about your operating model that might be contributing to the stress and overworking. Please don’t take this the wrong way because I’ve been there and know how tough it feels. However, making sure you understand how much of this comes from you and how much of it comes from external factors (ie the job) will ensure that the next decision you make (whether its finding another job or figuring out how to make it work in your current job) will help set you on a path to feeling better. Please stay well.
What type of role and industry did you join? Feeling this a lot with always thinking the grass is greener
Left a job where I assumed I had to pay back signing bonus but no one ever mentioned it from HR (though my boss did). I would’ve happily paid it because the new job was a much better fit and my mental health was suffering. Despite what others said above, it doesn’t really matter IMO what is making you unhappy at a job, if you think you’ll feel better elsewhere trust your gut and go for it!

Do not worry about the 5k, they may wave it or probaly would bother with it under the current environment. It is a small fee to pay for your mental and physical heath. See if you can work with HR and ask/ take an unpaid leave. It could be work and culture related. The general uncertainty and stress of WFH do not help the situation in general. If you need a pay check, see if you work with them and come up with a solution. Take good care and I am sure you will come out stronger.
HR business partners/ consultants / other internal HR roles etc. might be a good place to start
I think the 5k is the least of your worries to get out of something that makes you unhappy.
The real q is if this university job actually seems like where you want to be and if it will make you happy. Is it an escape to get out of something you hate or somewhere you actually want to be? Are you making that jump out of hope and optimism for where the trajectory might take your life (including WLB etc) or out of fear/dread/avoiding/escaping the less than ideal situation you’re in? Make sure you’re running TO something you actually want not just FROM something that’s causing you stress and pain.
I def think you should get out of the job you’re in if you hate it but make sure where you’re landing is also where you want to be. To move from a bad spot into another bad (or less than ideal) spot will make you feel worse and protract you’re journey to the right fit
