In all seriousness, does anyone feel fulfilled by accounting? And if so, please elaborate as to how so and what about our jobs is rewarding beyond just a paycheck.

Currently just collecting a paycheck. Trying to figure out what I actually like and want to do

Tax, for me fills my curiosity and also being surrounded by intelligent people everyday, it’s so cool see how different people think through problems. In all honesty, I really find enjoyment in figuring out solutions to complex problems, it’s really rewarding... I just need to work on not letting it stress me out at times haha

I just hit 3 years and I’m itching big-time for a change. I just don’t feel motivated anymore to audit financial statements for a bunch of rich folks at a hedge fund. Being in a basement audit room at 2am has made me think “why tf am I doing this” so many times. Probably gonna leave NYC and find something more fulfilling when my lease is up.

Just a handful of reasons that are meaningful to me: - we help clients achieve their goals, improve their businesses, build wealth, realize their dreams. Seriously, when we provide great ideas and insights and strategy and it makes a huge different to our clients, it's a great feeling. - we provide increased comfort and security to stakeholders. Capital requires accountability and we help provide and preserve it. Our work helps facilitate capital markets and entrepreneurial expansion. - we provide careers and livelihoods to thousands of employees. This supports hundreds of thousands of people/families. We help build careers and help people achieve their personal goals/dreams at work. Coaching someone and helping them make partner is a cool and rewarding feeling. - the list goes on I often hear people say things like "we dont save lives" in this profession. Maybe not the same way a surgeon does, but our profession brings stability and peace of mind to business and stakeholders. I have seen the flip side where people who are defrauded and lose everything commit suicide. Sometime families fall apart when unemployment hits and/or wealth is lost. Knowing our professions helps mitigate these types of things is important. Our profession is huge and we positively impact lives. I'm sure many who read this will roll their eyes and think I'm full of shit. That's ok. Everyone is entitled to their own view. But I know this, I am blessed to have an amazing career, an incredible family, great friends, etc and overall my life is full and rewarding. The reasons above are a significant part of why my life is so rich.

I don’t like the job but I’m down with the flexibility and culture so that’s where I find the real enjoyment

I’m on a team that interacts heavily with our clients, and having the opportunity to come in and solve problems is all I really wanted in a job. Having strong mentors and the chance to mentor others, as well as having diverse and challenging work, makes it worth it to me.

I came to public accounting from industry where I was a Senior GL Accountant and IMO public accounting is more fulfilling than actually doing the actual accounting transactions. I much more enjoy judging other people’s accounting than doing it myself. 😈

If you don’t like accounting and you keep doing this, you will never figure out what you like

Yes! But I work for a small firm. I always wanted a job where I could help people. Never realized I could find that in a small tax practice, but I did.

I haven’t found another thing I’d rather do. The placement tests said be a cop or be an accountant because your like rules. I am not sure I buy it but being a cop wasn’t for me.

I try find fulfilment outside of work and use my job to support that, so my job is fulfilling because it gives me the paycheck and flexibility to pursue those goals. Everyone will be different, but for me I get fulfilment by maintaining a marriage, raising a family and being involved in community organizations/charity. Obviously if the work environment was negative this wouldn't work, but since all I need from work is a neutral experience and money/flexibility, it work for me.

I dgaf about being fulfilled. I don't hate my job and I can pay my mortgage.

Overall yes. My Business Development goal is really just me getting to look for ways to help my clients and getting paid for it if I’m good enough at spotting opportunities. I get to teach and invest in new staff every year even though it’s exhausting. I have the flexibility to do what I need to when I need to for the most part. My only complaint is how much I work but I also don’t know if I could work any less at anything that I enjoy. Only thing that could be different is doing it more on my timeline

Fish: I know someone at another firm who has been ridiculed based on their perceived economic past as a child. Firm Leadership has circulated a suggestive photo with a demeaning caption with... CONT.

Looking to leave on good terms… I just accepted a position for a salary I know my current firm can’t match. My current firm also had no idea I was interviewing. I’m only able to give 3 weeks’ notice. I’ve developed a very close relationship with the partner I work for, who’s been a mentor and not just a boss. I’d appreciate advice on how to cleanly break the news to him, because this is a bridge I never want to burn. Thanks in advance.

If you have to take an hour off work for therapy, every week, would you share the reason for the time off with your manager ? Why or why not? I’m worried if I share this information, I might appear less competent; might be perceived as more emotional if I share just the fact that I’m getting therapy with my manager. ( he will probably tell his director about it, who will tell his manager, the MD. This is just how information flows in our team). I don’t need emergency therapy; I need long term

I am currently an associate in FDD. My firm is offering a decent bonus to do certification trainings. I’ve always been very interested in SAP and would love to do the certification (and get $$). My question is — how can I pitch this to leadership that this would help me in FDD (approval required to begin the certification)? In other words, I’m struggling to come up with the ‘why’ I want to do this other than my interests. I’m specifically looking at the SAP Financial Accounting Associate module
