Setting aside the veracity of this story, stuff like this is one of the reasons I'm skeptical of the idea of 'bringing your whole self to work'.
I'm fairly left wing, and there are thoughts, opinions and interests I hold that are bound to be offensive to someone or the other (it's a big world). None of them have a bearing on my ability to do my job effectively, but ultimately, I don't get to tell people what they should or shouldn't be offended about. If someone's offended or upset by what I say, that is what it is, and there's very little I can do to change that, nor would it really be appropriate for me to try.
Discussing these opinions with my colleagues has very little upside and potentially unlimited downside. The only rational choice is to keep my head down, do my job, and keep political opinions for places where they mean something (such as a political rally, a protest or the ballot box).
It used to be that it was just conservatives that had to keep their mouths shut at work. Now leftists have to also, because there are those even further left who will eat their own. What is this world coming to? The left needs to do a better job at policing its own
Offering constructive feedback:
Never discuss controversial politics in a client-facing professional environment. Consulting is a relationship-based business and everything revolves around that. We all have rights to our own views but you will not impress clients or colleagues with controversial opinions, and you may actually destroy important client and colleague relationships (like you have done here with the BA and EM who will not work with you again). Eg - you say something about Ann Ryan at a client dinner, turns out client loves Ann Ryan and gets offended. Client asks you personally to roll off team or asks McK to roll off. Very bad. Appropriate /safe rapport conversation topics are: the weather, sports teams, hobbies you might have such as golf, wine, travel/trips/ food you like etc. If you really want to be a warrior for your political views - go into politics or teach liberal arts classes.
Except it’s Ayn Rand.

1) your team seems smarter than I am. I had no idea what this atlas thing was.
2) this is crazy in my opinion. I had a less intellectual similar experience where I joked about taking boxing class and how it could help me with PS and a guy on my team made a similar bullshit comment that he felt unsafe with my violence. I’m a 115lb woman shorter and years younger than he is.
WTF with people?
You guys don’t have 49 days in a week? Weird, that’s what our billing says
We’re getting cherry picked data and not the full story here. This is very abnormal.
Colleagues so rarely raise issues like these up to EMs, so if the BA on your team did - there was something else you said or this builds upon multiple conversations and interactions.
Your EM also wouldn’t blindly pass this feedback along without believing there was some kernel of truth or opportunity to help you develop or avoid a pitfall.
I’d recommend appreciating and reflecting on this feedback now. Try to adapt before you risk a bad LIFT report. Not saying you can’t share your opinions, but something about the way in which you’re saying them is clearly rubbing folks in a very wrong way.
Agree with M4, never seen or heard of this kind of situation in 4 years at the firm. Sounds like an incomplete story.
OP, if you’re confused why a reasonable 20-something might be offended by what you said, would you be interested in talking directly to the affected person and getting to the bottom of it? I’d hate for you to not bring your true self to work, and at the same time you’re very likely to work with similar minded people in the future. So what’s the resolution here other than pointless banter on the bowl?
How do these people make it through the day
How did you believe this bullshit
Apparently what I said on the Zoom was too painful for her delicate ears and inflicted violence on her mental health.
OP, take therapy. Your reaction here is pretty infantile
This story sounds like complete bullshit.
The narrative tries to make OP look like the strong, reasonable party; versus a the weak, unreasonable one-dimensional stereotype of micro-aggression girl. It sounds like a completely made up story of something OP wishes they would have said on the call.
Honestly, how do you imagine saying that on a call would go? Would everyone on the call know exactly what your reference meant, or did you need to explain? Did they clap?
So glad to have found this comment. The OP’s story is like what an adolescent would imagine to make themselves feel validated. Then they take it a step further by posting their fever dream to social media.
Dude this is way too specific for them not to figure out who you are. Delete.
Your violence towards OP is making me want to throw up.
You don’t know what their experiences have been. Your comments and apparent dismissal of current events can very well be a microaggression. Know your audience. Apologize and move on.

What does her life or background have to do with Atlas shrugged?

Since we aren’t getting both sides of the story here you’re probably downplaying what you said, if this story happened at all.
No joke, if you're enough of a jackass that you haven't outgrown Ayn Rand and objectivism as an adult, you almost certainly said other dumb things.
SMH at the people in this thread complaining about the sensitiveness of the person that complained - we have someone comparing their life to Atlas Fucking Shrugged. Someone save OP from themselves before they ruin their next dinner party.
Yep. This. Goodbye truth. Goodbye good advice. Goodbye profession.

I mean I’d judge you for your bad taste in authors. But to each his own.

I mean I don't agree with very much of what Ayn Rand wrote, but I still read the book and found it interesting.
Ayn Rand was prophetic. Fountainhead one of my favorite books 📚
KPMG1 - I actually have enough confidence in my self to call out people who look to Ayn Rand to provide a blueprint for our society. My favorite book is Start Up Nation by Dan Senor and Saul Singer.
My guess is this is fake. But if it’s not, and based on OPs other comments, I’m willing to guess that this single event might make more sense with context.
One data point is easy to dismiss. But if that data point falls in line with a trend, then there’s the problem.
Furthermore, the fact that the EM thought this was significant enough to raise with OP suggests that there’s more to the story than what OP is communicating.

I consider every post by a McKinsey-Bot to be a microaggression
As opposed to a Watson bot?
“Microagression” -> 🤢
Someone is either being aggressive or they aren’t.
If I was the EM and had to have this conversation with anyone on my team, my feedback would be that they need to be more resilient especially considering they will hear far worse from clients.
This is also astute related to a literary reference so if this actually happened, the person complaining would be someone I’d avoid staffing at all costs.
I would have to verify the legitimacy by speaking to both.
That said this EM did speak to both. If this is as described, OP didn’t do anything worth a grown-up being upset over.

OP, I think you need to explain what you mean by this comment. Ayn Rand was a classic liberal who advocated for individualism, personal creativity as a culture, free market, entrepreneurial mindset and less govt. control through atlas shrugged. Atlas shrugged environment was akin to chrony capitalism and regulatory capture.
Now, if you say that we are living in an atlas shrugged environment, that means today’s govt is corrupted and is involved in these things above, so you are opposing the right wing here. I am not sure where virtue signaling comment sit here.
So, I am not exactly sure what we’re you trying to convey there. Do you mean equality and social justice should be placed below free market? Or you are saying that govt. is corrupt and promoting some businesses for selfish reasons or promoting nepotism than actual talent.
A1 seems to have it straight to me.
Sound about right

OP can I suggest some insights here. First it may not have been entirely what you said but that she already doesn't like you that much and didn't like your tone. Secondly you didn't do anything wrong. But thirdly it was a tactical error to bring that up.
Law 4: Always say less than necessary
You let her put you into a box by tipping your hand. She now feels she has enough knowledge to think of you in a very negative and immutable way. That's why you always let your true beliefs remain mysterious
