If I was reached out to on LinkedIn, I always mention that I wasn’t actively looking, but researched the company and found xyz about the company that stood out to me.
Career path is actually a good thing to bring up if the new company aligns with your goals. I’d refrain from talking negatively about your current employer though.
Just say you really like where you are but are also ready for a change, then mention a couple things that you really like about the firm you are interviewing for.
That’s what I usually do! The latest recruiter though looked disappointed that I like where I am, I think he though that I wasn’t serious about applying at their company. But he was also a bit scared that they were a little company compared to IBM so probably he was wondering why I was interested in the first place (which I later explained in detail)
Oh and also, I don’t want to say bad things about my current employer. So I cannot go into the details of my recent career bumps, my (un-existing) current career path and stuff like that
You don’t need to go into specifics but the typical answers of looking for continued growth opportunities, something different, etc. are all fine answers. No need to be too transparent here as it’s usually a way to weed out bad answers (eg bad mouthing etc).
