Thought this was funny.
I started working for my company about 6 weeks ago and I was originally hired to work from a specific location closer to my home. I was told the 1st day of my employment that the location “is not ready yet” and that I would be working out of a temp location further from my home. It has been really inconvenient for me to say the very least and the remote option is unavailable to me until after the probation period which is 6 months. How should I approach having this conversation with my director?

Op - If he isn’t in his crate, then yes, you need to have him essentially next to you & supervised.
Crate training is resolved within a few days if you know how to do it and aren’t giving in to him crying. YouTube it
Schedule time with a trainer for them to come to your house and walk through how to do this.
Potty training is also doable in a week if you are vigilant and consistent. Depending on age of puppy, you need to have a strict/consistent potty schedule (ie ASAP when he wakes, ASAP after eating, and every hour or two hours depending on age).
And before people come for me and tell me I’m “harsh” or unrealistic - I foster puppies/dogs, so know what I’m talking about. The only time it all goes to ish is when I’m not sticking to the schedule and consistent
Respectfully, did you not YouTube/research this extensively before getting a puppy?
Good news. Worked it out with my SO. We stayed in the living room next to the crate. Plan on taking turns for next few weeks to let the puppy out to potty at night.
Get another one
Getting two dogs is actually easier. They play together and burn off steam.
Getting two kids is not easier.
You’re going to be ok. The first several weeks are rough (and stressful) but it’ll start to ease up and then it’s the best
Watch YouTube videos on potty training! Definitely helps. I also remember being overwhelmed but think 6 months down you have a system in place and if you train properly it’s the easiest job. It’s not that much work in 6 months. Feel free to message if need more tips. You got this!
We walk our new puppy every 2 hrs, and every 1 hr after meals/water. We give him water 4-5 times a day
Clicker is just more distinct bc we give it so many compliments all the time lol
Get a goldfish.
#1) Crate train them. You don’t always need to crate them when they’re older but it will save you so much pain in their puppy months if you just crate train them now. Get them the snuggle puppy toy that has a heartbeat and warmer and leave it in there with them. Buy it on Amazon. Don’t give in to the crying. We don’t crate our dog anymore but if we say “crate time” he gets excited and starts looking for it. It’s their home.
#2) If you’re in an apartment, invest in some real grass as a potty spot. There’s a company online that sells it for dogs that was on Shark Tank. Every time they go in the house, wipe up the pee or poop and place it on the grass. If you see them start to go, pick them up and put them on the grass. If you don’t live in an apartment, do all this but outside with real grass. Figure out what motivates your dog - treats, attention, praise, etc. and give them a bounty of it when they go potty correctly.
Invest in a trainer. We paid a stupid amount of money the first 6 months of our pups life to train him and it was 10000% worth it.
Also you need to be socializing this dog. If they don’t have their shots then just carry them around in a dog tote so they take in all the noises scents etc. What they experience now will shape them forever. Try to turn any negative experience into a positive one. Go to puppy play classes. Nip any emerging stuff like resourcing guarding right away. Get them used to fingers in their mouth / hands in their face / people touching them. You need to teach bite inhibition now. When they bite too hard say “ouch”. All puppy’s play bite when teething - it sucks and hurts like hell but that’s when they learn not to be mouthy.
Basically just Google everything. You’ve got this.
Next time potty train over the summer so it’s not cold outside lol
He loves the cold lol
Find a dog trainer to come to your home. You will immediately feel better if they are any good.
Watch @allthingspups on Instagram. You NEED to start instilling routine, consistency and positive training ASAP.
You should be planning to take your pup out overnight; they’re too young at this age to wait all night. Set yourself up for future success and make sure you’re supporting their needs now for long term success.
Watch YouTube videos for training (command, mark correct behavior with positive word, reward with treat; correct with “nuh uh” or gentle correction word), and then either enroll in a puppy class or engage with a trainer 1:1 as soon as your pup has all necessary shots. Depending on what city you’re in, people here may have recommendations.
You’re also going to learn how to provide structure for the best interests of your pup while managing your expectations. The first day I got my rescue pup, I sobbed in an Uber on the way to work and immediately made an emergency trip to Best Buy after work to buy a nest cam. The cries and sweetness is real, but structure, alone time, ability to self-soothe and not be anxious when you leave is critically important for long term health and wellness. Please, please begin researching how to best begin teaching this (for both your sakes!)
When I was helping raise a puppy this summer we had one of those metal play pens for puppies set up in the kitchen and it was a life saver. Not as small as a crate but still provided a safe place to be unsupervised. I tried taking her outside every hour or two between meetings and I had to stay out of eyeshot when I wasn’t playing with her or else she would cry. In the playpen we had a fake grass potty pad, toys, and then one of those treat toys that you stuff with treats and it takes them a while to get them all out. It was still stressful but each of those things helped.
Yes. Kiss the first 6 months -1 year goodbye. Better to automate things in your life like a maid, meal service and canceling your gym membership for online workouts instead.
But after that, you'll have years of happiness if you train them correctly. Think of it like the SATs and double down.
