In general, what are your thoughts around engagement management vs product management? I’ve found countless YouTube videos explaining product management, career opportunities, and crazy comps, but very little when it comes to engagement managers. Would love to hear your take on the better of the two career paths (especially in terms of TC, as well as work/life balance) full disclosure- I’m an engagement manager now and having a hard time defining a career track/development opps

Engagement manager is a relatively new field, so not much of a career track yet. Companies have two perspective for it:
- engagement manager develops sow and works with sales to push signature of a contract - more focused on sales and solutions architects - and then tosses it over to TAM to manage
- engagement manager leads a small team of developers to deliver the technical solution

WLB ebbs and flows as the sales cycle changes or based on delivery timelines.

Product manager will be more strategic internally - figuring out where the product goes. Engagement manager will be more about execution and expansion.

TC wise, engagement manager pays pretty well since they are usually customer facing, need technical and soft skills, and might even have a bonus attached. Product will probably lead to more promotions since product is usually king at most organizations.

I think the way I would think about it is if you want to pursue a career of managing bigger and bigger engagements and grow a book of business. Or do you want to focus more on building a product.

Is an engagement manager kind of unique to consulting? I honestly am not sure, but just kind of assume based on the name, that there would be few (if any) non consulting/audit companies that would require an engagement manager

From what I've seen, engagement managers more align with account management and project management. Sales and getting signatures while managing the quality of deliverables.

Although EM doesn't have as much of a pathed career path, I would imagine higher levels of Account Mgmt and Program Management being the route up

Looking for advice on what to do with clients if I want to go in-house. We have 5 other attorneys so as of now my clients could likely be absorbed into the rest of the law firm. However if 1-2 of the attorneys here left that wouldn’t be an option. Has anyone done this and have tips?I don’t have an offer yet but I’m trying to prepare. My firm knows I’m exploring this as a career option.

Any thoughts on the best certifications to get in order to help move forward? I have considered the CCP from World at Work, but it’s fairly pricey to get by the time you wrap up everything. I was looking at both SHRM-CP and SPHR. Everyone that I have spoken to has the SHRM, but that’s also only looking at individuals in a small geographic footprint and within 3-4 different companies. I was hoping to get some thoughts on this from others? Thanks

Hi all. I’m making a career shift from graphic design to project management. Can I reasonably negotiate and ask for $60k base?
