Can’t speak for other in-house departments, but our immigration attorneys are paid the same as other attorneys in the legal department. Promotion to senior legal leadership positions might be more difficult because of the specialized focus. Afaik, in our dept., up to around $200k base plus 40%ish in incentive comp. for remote pay band for the most senior immigration role. 30% less for the most junior role.

Six months ago, the role of sole head of the business unit was advertised, interviews took place and after a lengthy process, the decision has been made to appointed my partner as the head, but no change the job grade! The reasons given are so that my partner may further upskill stakeholder management skills. Review in grading and salary in 6 months more. Is this reasonable?

Should I keep my new job or boomerang back to my old job? The new job pays 50K more base, 25K more bonus and I get 40K a year consulting for the old job so around 115K difference in cash (not counting equity).

So why even consider going back to the old job? The new job keeps me busy 12+ hours a day while the old job is a coast at 1-2 hours a day max.

My idea is not to enjoy the free time and sit on *ss, but to figure out side gigs, passive income streams or even start a startup. (continued)

Has anyone had a background check done by HireRight recently? Did they send you a notification when it was complete? I have an offer letter contingent on passing background and drug test so I haven’t put in my notice to my current employer but the contingent start date is May 17. I’m thinking I’m obviously going to have to push it back to give a proper two weeks to my current employer but I’m wondering if I will even get a notification when HireRight is done with my background check.

PSA: didn’t think anyone needed to hear this, but apparently many do. When you’re interviewing for a job you actually want, and the interviewer asks if you have any questions for them at the end, have questions ready, and legitimate ones. It’s a really bad look when candidates say “no I don’t have any questions,” or they ask something incredibly stupid like “what cool swag do you get?”

What law firm is your favorite for run of the mill employment issues in the US and internationally (India, Australia, UK, Germany, etc.). I primarily use Littler because they have a broad reach and decent rates but I’m wondering whether Bird & Bird, Ogletree, or some other firm has similar pricing and as good or better quality work. So, who are you using and are you happy?

Newly in-house. Apparently, it was bad to offer my opinion that slightly differed from the managers, even though I was invited by said manager to review their suggestion with an internal client. We collectively discussed how to make a document better. I responded to an email that said "hey you and internal client - could you both see my suggestions (which differed from the clients). Internal client didn't really agree, so I said "can we add managers edits but keep some of clients edits"

Have you had to change your start date after accepting an offer and how did it go? I told them I need to give 30 day notice and so I set my start date (incorrectly) assuming the background check and drug screen would take a few days to clear. However, the drug screen is now taking over a week and a half (still not finished, maybe tomorrow). Apparently things are much slower due to staffing issues and labs are backed up. It’s cutting into my 30 day notice significantly. Thoughts?
