In my opinion, people who lack empathy or social cues should be let go, since it’s clear they don’t have the makings of a good leader.
If you make business decisions without understanding drivers of business success, which include details like worker motivation and culture, then you are doomed to failure.
OP your biggest assumption here is that the layoffs will only impact people are who actually failing to carry their weight.
In reality, it will impact a lot of people who were placed in situations where no one could succeed, or were never given appropriate guidance / feedback that would allow them to succeed. Some will also fall inevitably due to nepotism, ageism, racism, and sexism playing some sort of role in the decision making process.
If layoffs were as easy as you describe, we wouldn’t need them in mass because companies would just routinely fire poor performers each year and hire replacements.
If you mean people that aren’t performing well after feedback and coaching sessions then I agree, they should be let go. But if you mean the people that aren’t performing well because of the current economic environment / pandemic and reasons outside of their control, then I would encourage you to do some introspection and think about what you would want if you were in their shoes.

And you’re the one to determine whether they carry weight for the firm?
According to a lot of RLs, CRT was very different this year and they are bumping a lot people who should be a 3 into tier 4 just because of the situation going on right now. I think a lot of us would agree it’s not fair to fire these people when they have been pulling their weight and haven’t done anything wrong.

Good thing your opinion of “carrying the weight” means almost nothing

What if we are just heavy?

Not necessarily fair to everyone. There are people who want to help but are not offered the opportunity to due to politics and preferences. Some want a break and some want to help.
Unfortunately, D2, the person trying to help more is still made to look bad no matter how much they try. This was me last year – have plenty of emails to my Coach and HR to prove it. Yet I’m still blamed. Office politics is a load of BS.

I’m ok with people not being empathetic about the crazy political climate and pandemic being fired

Pwc I’d be careful about being too cavalier about that. Like I get it. But have some empathy. Non sociopathic people do even when they have to make a tough decision. You may be affected this year by the way. Big 4 is starting to do non performance related layoffs. I can directly confirm this. You are not immune. Pwc fye has not happened yet
I think most would agree with this on principle. The struggle is (1) determining how much weight each person should be carrying and what that weight looks like and (2) how we objectively and fairly determine whether each person is actually carrying it.
💯
Amen.
