In my quest to seek out a direct but also passive investment opportunity I’ve “stumbled” across some oil drilling companies. This is my first time exploring anything outside of funds and real estate. The ops sound good. Decent returns and a killer tax advantage. Could any of you 🔥 🐠 with experience in oil and gas give me some high level thoughts, experience notes, companies to stay away from etc? The insight is greatly appreciated. I’m looking to invest about $150k

Why invest in something that’s killing our future?

That’s your opinion. My opinion is that my investments will help my children thereby nurturing and assisting my and their future.

If you’re investing through these teams that reach out to individual investors I would avoid. The people who put the deal together take the least risk and the biggest chunk of the gains. You might still get an okay return but if any problems arise those teams put the cost on your investment.

Are you an accredited investor?

Being an accredited investor has a specific level of wealth and/or income. It’s a designation by the IRS.

Private securities have rules about how they must be offered. Securities that are reserved for accredited investors are allowed to promote wider than securities that allow non-accredited investors. That means that if you’re a non-accredited investor, you typically don’t get the first pick of securities.

From an oil perspective, I feel like we’ve missed the major oil boom. The good fields have all been found, and the big oil companies likely own all the best plots of land. They also have the means and technology to find plots of land that are likely to contain oil, and private owners are unlikely to find anything valuable. The oil companies have all the incentive to buy out any plots that have any proven track record of success, and they can overpay in value because they are best positioned to extract the most value from it. That means that a private investor like yourself isn’t likely to find any sort of investment that has any predictable or long term value, which means you’re just speculating.

I’d suggest trying to find people who have owned oil field investments for 5 to 10 years, and ask them how volatile they have been.

Me: No, am looking for small cap coins that are going to be able to 10x or 100x from here. But when you look at bitcoin, it’s $40k.. $40k times 10x is $400k. A lot of shit has to happen for bitcoin to move to $400k and it’s gonna take a lot of time.

Has anyone dealt with a FIRPTA withholding on a sale? It looks like the seller of a condo I’m interested now is an international student so it would apply. I was planning to buy a home next year, but now I expect to renew my lease once it expires. If so, I wouldn't be buying a home for at least 2 years from now.

Guessing I should still leave the down payment in a HYSA (getting 3% right now)? Sucks to miss out on market returns, but I understand that conventional wisdom is not to invest money you'll need in the short term (within 3ish years). I'm definitely tempted to put a portion of that in VTI though...

Everyone has a different perspective on this but would love to hear yours. Someone has debt ranging say 4-5% interest rates. Do you attack debt more then investing to move towards a debt free life or do you go after investments since they return historically above that then paying down closer towards retirement. I know the latter looks better on paper but what about the psychological factors of being debt free and the guaranteed return on interest savings.

How likely is one to succeed at using a competing job offer to negotiate a raise at your own company? I’m happy at my current company aside from compensation, and don’t want to leave. But I wonder whether getting a better offer and trying to negotiate better pay in the current role is a losing proposition, because even if it is accepted, it may sour the current company on me, and put a target on my back in case people need to be let go. I also know I’m not indispensable to my company.
