I’ve received feedback that while I’m good at my job, I’m too quiet in meetings and need to stand out and speak up more. It’s not in my personality; I normally just do my work and let that speak for itself. It’s frustrating when I hear men that are just so able to BS and get promoted for doing nothing.

like

I’m annoyed for you. Speak up more for what? Unless they had specific examples of when you speaking up could have changed the trajectory of a project, I call bs. Seems like trying to provide feedback just to hold you back from getting raise or promo.

Commenting again to add context. I am, generally, outspoken and at the forefront of conversations and meetings. However, my personality is perceived as upbeat and bubbly, which doesn’t necessarily emulate the male and/or “older” generation’s perception of gravitas. I do know I radiate positive energy and enthusiasm — so I’m seeking ways to build credibility and influence that have worked for others. Seeking: Books, articles, ways of speaking or writing, ideas for proposing collaboration with partners and above that can align with company/client goals. Also seeking: empathy and relatability from others who are or have been in similar situations

Thank you! I’ll keep thinking on this. To define a simple and clear ROI/benefit from the influence I do hold - and find specifically where that overlaps with their vision.

Usually this means getting the highest leadership at your company to notice you and want to recognize/reward you, so your bosses boss, unless you are already reporting to highest person. Sorry I didn’t read all the comments or dig into the situation more so not sure if you already addressed this. I’ve gotten this feedback before though!

like

Thanks! Yes, that sounds very logical. I do report into c-suite directly though. And work with them, so I suppose I need to strengthen their trust in me and my overall contributions

For me, I checked everything on the list but I haven’t won an award yet. So I quit instead, fuck ‘em.

Completely relate! This is a maddeningly common got women to receive feedback on their personality rather than their performance because they don’t conform to typically male leadership traits. How many times have we been told we don’t “own the room” or have “gravitas.” One question though: do you believe your leadership style works? That is one question that made me change my perception of who I am. I am very optimistic too. I don’t recommend changing your personality but I do recommend you seek professional coaching so she can evaluate objectively how you present yourself (because it’s all in the details). Like you could be perfect but have a more high pitched way of ending a sentence for example (making this up) and small tweaks can be made like lowering that. Ps fish bowl did a survey series on this last year that was super interesting and helped validate our experience
