What firm?

Some level of flexibility over working hours (ie not punching in and out), ability to work from home (or anywhere in the world really), always learning something new and getting to learn about my client’s businesses, good pay, enough routine/boring tasks that I get to work and listen to podcasts simultaneously at least an hour per day.

Smart, friendly people and interesting work. Not all of the work is interesting, but a lot of it is! I tried government for a few years, thinking the work would be interesting but there would be better hours. Well, it was a rude awakening. The work was BORING and nobody in my office cared that we only worked 4 hours a day, but had to be in the office for 8.5. You try killing 4+ hours/day for years on end. I think that was an exceptionally bad government experience, but it was a terrible fit. If you’re someone who is motivated and enjoys being engaged at work (rather than just getting a paycheck to show up and wait for retirement), law firms are good places to work. And the money’s nice too.

Money, not having to clock in, per se (despite the clock and pile of obligations never stopping). Recent “innovations” like Teams/Slack and having everything on video, including a lot of things that used to be handled in calls where you didn’t have to worry about appearances on video, make this latter aspect much worse.

Mid-level here. Has anyone gotten their firm to approve their doing work at a deep discount and, if so, what strategies did you use? A potential client approached me directly about a small matter (~20 to 30 hr amicus brief). The potential client (gov’t) pays a standard rate ~40% lower than mine, but I want to take on the project because it would be a good professional opportunity (e.g., high profile case & client) and of course the lower rate won’t affect my comp directly. 🤷‍♀️ All advice welcome!

Two holiday related questions:
1. My firm has a secret holiday candy thing where you can send holiday candy to someone. Two partners sent me, first year, holiday candy and a card. Would the appropriate response be a thank you card that I drop off with their assistants or would it be me dropping by their office? I don’t know the partners and they’re not in my practice group. 2. First year question, do people usually give something to their assistants during the holidays? Context (contd).

Corp/securities associate and lateraled to a 40-50 attorney firm earlier this year. I’m a non traditional candidate and considered a 3rd or 4th year and make $200k base. Waiting on raise/bonus info but can’t help but wonder if I could be making $100k more at a larger firm and working similar hours. I put a premium on the people I work with and have gotten a good rhythm here as well as built up a good rep so far. For reference I have billed avg. 180-200 hrs a month. Any insights?
