Look at a Senior writer’s job description vs yours. What are the main differences that would take you to the next level? Put it into a spreadsheet in one column. In the next column, write out the business reasons why each one is important in the next column (proactive ideation increases deal sizes, etc). In the next column, write out specific examples in the next column of how you achieved that within your time there. Instead of a set of reasons why you think you deserve it, this exercise tangibly proves that you’ve already been working at this caliber of the next step paired with concrete business reasons.

This has worked for people I’ve worked with. It’s proof that speaks to senior leadership and HR. The only reason why anyone I know hasn’t gotten a promotion based off this spreadsheet is lack of company budget.

What ACD says - only way to get internal bumps is to prove you are already at the level of the more senior job spec. Also remember how much you’ll save them in time / money / upskilling needs vs going external. If recruiters are involved, easily in the thousands.

Question for EY moms - my husband and I are thinking about starting a family soon, so I was looking up the parental leave policy to see what my options are. I know some firms have clawback clauses that require you to come back to work for a specific period of time or else you have to pay back the salary you received while on leave, but I couldn’t find anything similar in the EY policy. Does this mean EY doesn’t have a clawback clause for parental leave, or is it just hidden away somewhere? TIA!

Any trial attorneys in here who can speak to hours at trial? The partners who I work for must have some kind of pharmaceutical help, because on a 2 week trial they are expecting everyone (partners, associates, and paralegals) to operate on 1-2 hours of sleep per night and be ready to go and be flawless in court all day, every day. This is my first jury trial so I have no context for knowing whether this is normal or not. I had a bench trial that was a lot of work, but not like this.
