In SaaS Sales, do you believe it's beneficial to change niches or keeping them fairly the same as you change jobs?

Example could be Selling something technical to engineers vs Selling to Marketing people in the next role...

Would love to hear your experience.

As long as you can adjust your approach and the product is positioned well in the market, I don’t see an issue.

Obviously you’re better off building on industry experience and I wouldn’t constantly jump around- but if you’re interested in something specific just go for it and figure it out.

I would recommend staying in one industry unless you are worried about the number of job opportunities available. If you are, then it makes sense to make yourself more versatile.

I go for them all! I switch up my approach depending on the niche but the fundamentals are all pretty much the same

I have sold everything under the sun. I noticed hiring managers wanted specialized skills with co-workers but I had 2 tech degrees plus different experience and they always said if you could do all of that you could do this no problem. It just depends if you want to be specialized expert or jack of all trades. I needed to be a jack of all trades for my career.

I think it may be time...

Thanks for the points of view. My own thoughts are.that selling to different personas might help make you more of a versatile seller giving you exposure to value drivers from different parts of the business that you may not be exposed to.

However, it may be harder to build a a good customer network long term

Get that exposure early in your career and then figure out your niche and carve it out.

If you are mid career and unhappy then switching it up could be beneficial but also keep in mind whether you actually like sales or not, and if so what you do like about the job.

I used to jump from industry to industry for about the first 25 years of my sales career. I thought it would allow me to become more well-rounded. But then (about 15 years ago) hiring managers started to ask who I'd be meeting with in the first 90 days of employment, and if I didn't have a good answer, they'd pass on me. As a result, I've stayed in the same (Information Security software) industry since 2007. Nobody's interested in helping you get a toe-hold in their industry nor teaching you the ropes. They just want to hire you and expect you to have the Rolodex + a well-worn sales process + amazing results.

Oracle 1 - you are presuming that I moved to a competitor. The spectrum of Information Security products is so vast that you can move from IAM -> DLP -> SOAR -> SIEM -> EDP -> XDR and never see the same category twice. Thank you for the denigration and the opportunity to explain myself.

Hi Fishes,

I recently interviewed at a company and the hiring manager(HM) asked for my expected salary and said that he will make it same & forward to HR.
But had a HR discussion today and they are saying that it’s not in the budget and want to come down.
I went back to the HM, he said that he’ll be talking to the HR , and after that HM said that it’s a little hard for the leadership team and hence, would be discussing with the VP if that could be offered. Will they come back now or I lost job?

Lead nurturing is about follow-up, follow-up, follow-up.

The goal is to stay in front of your opportunities in a way that portrays the value of your product/service rather than annoyance.

A good lead nurturing program matches the buying timeline of every opportunity whether that be a week, month, or a year.

A study done by Insidesales shows that 50% of sales happen AFTER the 5th touch. Not all opportunities are ready to buy right away, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t worth pursuing.
