In the 10+ years I've been in this industry, I see more and more people doing so much great work and really pulling all of the dead weight having a small head or doubting themselves whereas the people not doing shit and being pulled, usually having the biggest heads and thinking they are amazing.
It's pretty impressive to watch this discrepancy.

Just thinking out loud - Anyone experiences that too?

Yup, that's typically how it goes. Those who are humble often provide higher quality work, but are often overlooked.

Also, people who do great work, have usually very high expectations of themselves, and tend to think they’re not doing as great as they should.

It’s been this way as long as I can remember. I’ve seen the humble folks get the acknowledgment they deserve. Usually the loudmouths are found out, in my experience.

Its so true. This has been my experience as well. But the loudmouths do get found out for sure.

People doing the great work doubt themselves cos they're looking at the fakers and wondering, what are we doing wrong? And then being told at reviews all the issues they gotta fix as they're left behind. The doers and middle managers are kept in their roles to support the musical chairs of fakers. It's gaslighting at the corporate level. Corporate rewards talkers cos it's all about optics.

During the panny, my agency moved a handful of us to a different office with no choice. Basically said we’d be fired if we didn’t comply. When we asked if we would ever have to move to the new city, we were given no answers for months. Now, they’re saying back to office in September and I have a feeling they’ll be expecting us to move. Should I ask for money to move? I personally can’t afford to and told them from the start I can’t move. Also, I really don’t want to leave my S/O. Help!

Should an ad agency be able to thoroughly check my references and ask for my entire employment history (including why I left each job) before agreeing on a salary?

I’ve had 7 interviews, met every stakeholder, was initially approached by one of them, who will be my boss. Plus I’ve had great feedback after every interview.

I was laid off from my previous job because of COVID so don’t have a ton of leverage. But that shouldn’t make me powerless. The process just seems like overkill.
