This was me a few years ago. Networking is key. I got my job because my mentor and a bunch of senior attorneys I worked with in-house knew my now boss. I’m also in the DC area so would be happy to chat with you.
Thanks A3! I am definitely trying to network more and currently looking for a mentor. I’ve reached out to some of the attorneys in my field on LinkedIn asking about mentorship but haven’t received responses back. Hoping to be able to do some in person networking when this is over.
The criticism that I’ve heard about attorneys that lateral from in-house is that they aren’t used to doing the heavy lifting on teams (especially as a junior attorney) and that they haven’t been subjected to long-grueling hours of firm life so they are a bit naive regarding the move. Unfair, but that’s what you’re up against. Try showing as much initiative as you can, and tackle those perceptions directly (maybe telling a story about how hard/long you worked for an outcome). Good luck!
Thanks, I worked to combat this in the interviews I had I think it was fairly successful since they asked me back. While not billiable hours I typically work at least 60 hour week. We’re a global company so a lot of late nights supporting the APAC region. I guess I’m hoping for more guidance on how to even get in the door. If firms see in-house on my resume and just toss it.
I’ve been applying since August. I’ve interviewed at 3 firms made it to the final rounds of interviews but all ended up choosing a lateral from another firm. I’ve applied to a lot more without ever hearing back. I know now hiring will likely slow for awhile but I’d still appreciate advice on what I can do in the future. Willing to come in as a first year.
Before or after this mess?
Are you willing to move to NYC? Have you reached out to at firms where your employer is a client? Have you reached out to your law school alumni at firms? Could you network at bar section groups or CLE events? Are you a minority?
