If you are doing admin ** related to a project ** , ie: reading emails, paperwork, training, attending meeting, status, etc then that administration type work is billable project work (in most client contracts).
If you spent time doing non client related work ask for a code for that.

I’ve always just billed to our biggest client

I always put down the 8h or expected hrs unless I work very late.

Ask for work, and if nobody gets back to me with anything, then I’ll bill to admin. 🤷🏻‍♀️

like

This is the appropriate answer. ✅

In my first job I put down my actual hours worked against those projects and put the rest in admin.

My boss called me into a meeting to rethink and double check those timesheets.

like

Your boss will look at what percent of your time is billable. If you’re putting Admin hours for, say, 25% or such, you’re not that profitable and job security might not be there. Better to stretch your hours by working longer on those billable projects, be generous.

My projects dwindled a bit over the last week. Asked around if anyone needed assists-no bites. Several were released. No new k/o’s in the last 10 days. Job security is coming into question after passing first 3 mo and no response about a 3mo check in.

I look for work and ask around, go back to old ideas and develop them a bit to have them ready for future pitches, try to get a head start on some social stuff, do some spring cleaning with the files on my computer, and see if I can take can schedule some meetings w mentor and walk through work produced or a tutorial.

If there’s nothing else I see if I can take care of errands off the clock till I have a new project on my plate.

How frequently are you kicked off on new projects? It was steady for me, last 10 days have been getting them out the door, few coming in.

I’ve worked the last nine years for my state legislature as an attorney analyst, drafting and analyzing proposed legislation. I’ve primarily worked on health professional regulations. Next year, I will apply for student loans forgiveness under the public service program and would like a change. I know others who have gone into lobbying/government relations, but I would like to find other options to pursue. I’ve never done billable work so not sure if law firm life is for me. Any suggestions?

Question re: salary. I’m thinking about accepting an offer at a small (4-6 attorneys) transactional firm. I would primarily be working on NDAs for clients. The role sounds great (no billable hours, fully remote, flexible hours/ can work from anywhere); however, the salary is $70K. I’m a new attorney, with only one year of experience. Does this salary seem low? If so, any advice on what someone in my position should ask for?

I have a question about mid-size Philadelphia law firms. Does anyone have any insight about what life is like (culture, pay, billable hours, cases, WFH, perks, etc.) as a junior partner/senior associate/of counsel in the litigation department at the following firms: Montgomery McCracken, Schnader Harrison, Stradley Ronon, Dilworth Paxson, Klehr Harrison?

What's up everyone? I saw a salary survey posted earlier. What do y'all think I should make at a litigation boutique that handles primarily business litigation on a contingency fee? No billable hours.

I know that it likely “depends” and varies from firm to firm but does anyone have any insight on (or experience with) whether firms rely on “total billable hours” or “total billable hours credit” to determine whether hours have been met/bonus applies?

Some good news after almost 11 months of applying and interviews and lots of rejections finally got an offer! In NYC small firm, ex big law folks, no billable hours, niche practice area, appearance of forwarded thinking firm, remote till who knows when, emphasis on pro bono initiatives and building book of business. The catch salary. Was making around 140k at last firm with 1800 billable. Offer is 85k and revist to bump to around 100k in several months after review (plus discretionary bonus)

Some of you really only bill 17/1800 hours? Are you just busy doing non-billable work or you just don’t have enough work coming to you? If it’s because you don’t have enough work does that mean you have your evenings and weekends to yourself too? Could you maybe help the rest of us out who never get either?

What do you do to keep hours stable in corporate practice/ ECVC?

So I have completely lost interest in my area of practice mainly because I haven’t been exposed to many matters (our team is really slow) and I am the most junior in the team. So billable work is never constant. I feel like this has impacted my interest and stagnated my growth. I am thinking of moving into a different area of practice that I’m interested in. Has anyone ever done this? I’m actually depressed and I really hate being given work now. I have ADHD. Please advise

My firm has a collections budget (80% of your billable rate x 1850 hours) and an hourly budget that must be met in order to be eligible for a bonus. The firm cares very little about originations and will reward someone for making their collections over someone who brings in new work. I missed my collection budget due to some odd timing with a client, but originated more than all my peers so no bonus for me. I’ve been at this same mid level firm for 9 years and it’s all I know. Is this normal??

Ok, maybe this has been done before, but I want to get a real life sense of the difference between EPLI and Private L&E (management side) practices. Let's do a poll:

1.) Primary source of business: EPLI or Private Companies?

2.) Number of matters you are currently working on

3.) Average billable rate (your year)

4.) Normal working hours/wk

5.) Percentages: Litigation vs Counseling

6.) Type of firm: ID, Big 4, Boutique, BigLaw, etc.

I'll kick things off in comments.
