In the past five years I’ve had some amazing contract opportunities at companies I’ve liked a lot. They are top-tier and look amazing on my résumé and I’m sure they have helped me get the next gig. My issue is I want to be converted to a full-time employee and I have not figured out how to do this yet. I’ve networked, gotten referrals, and have even had several interviews for full-time roles where I’ve gotten to the last round, but no offers. Any advice? Thanks!

Are you currently at FB? It’s difficult to convert from contract to FT at FB but not impossible. Why don’t you completely leave and apply again as a new candidate?

Yes, I am and before this I was at Google as a contractor as well. I’ve been told that it’s really hard to convert at both places, but I see others who have done it so I know it’s achievable. Just haven’t figured it out yet. Thanks for the tip.

Are you applying for roles within the teams/orgs you're supporting as a contractor? A referral to another role/team is nice, but you need a hiring manager pulling for you. Also, are the relationships you have with these groups with senior folks?

Hi. I’ve been applying to other teams actually. The teams I’ve been on haven’t had headcount as they’ve been smaller niche groups. I have had contacts with hiring mgrs. I was told I was the top candidate for a FT role at another tech company before I accepted my current role and I got beat out at the end after two and a half months of the process.

If the same company is hiring for two very similar but different positions and you qualify for both, do you apply to both? Additional caveat is that I interviewed for one of them last week. No word yet on whether I made it to the next round. Would gladly accept either position, but not sure how it would look if I apply for the second position while still being considered for the first. On the flip side, I don't want to miss the window on the second position while waiting to hear back...thoughts?

I’ve always gotten the advice that when you want to switch jobs you should take interviews from places you’re not actually interested in, so you can understand your value in the market and have better negotiating power.

I’m doing that rn - took a couple interviews to gauge my skills, my market value, and see what I need to work on for interviews that I actually care about.

However, I feel really guilty about wasting their time and going all the way knowing I’ll just say no at the end. Wwyd?
