Applying for jobs I’m fully qualified for, using all the right keywords, resume structure, etc., and never even getting an interview.
1. Salaries not being given in job ads
2. Not being invited for interviews even though you match all their requirements & custom wrote your resume & cover letter for the job
3. Being ghosted just companies after telephone screenings
When recruiters don't say their budget early on
Getting ghosted for weeks before you get a follow up response for next rounds - happened to me twice since I accepted another offer 😒
1) As others mentioned, either no salary listed or range is too vague (e.g. $84k-$154k...like seriously? lol)
2) Interview process for SWE is rough b/c there's so many stages of interviews - technical ones are annoying to prepare for since you don't know what to really expect in terms of technical knowledge
3) Getting ghosted before/during interview process or getting rejected without any specific feedback/reason
4) First interview going straight into behavioral/technical questions to see if you're actually qualified before you're even able to ask about the role, company, team, culture, project, etc.
5) Title of position and roles being vague ("Software Engineer" title can mean literally anything in terms of software development)
Recruiters and/or those conducting the interview disregarding transferable skill sets.
"No, I haven't specifically been given this particular title in my previous work history, but I have been a *fill in the blank* which definitely matches the skill set you require, and it also brings *again fill in the blank* that other candidates would not be bringing to the table."
It's like their hearing shuts off in the screening or first round of interviews when something like that is said to them.
Applied for a tech support role. Interviewed and was asked/encouraged to apply for a leadership role with the organization. Did, never heard back from them.
Having the exact experience they’re looking for but in a different country… haven’t got an interview just because I’m Latino although I’m a US citizen. All the job posts include this “equal opportunity” disclaimer, though all I receive are rejections via automated ATS messages.
Definitely unclear timeline & process. My most recent interview was 6 rounds and this wasn't articulated to me at the beginning of the process
