It is important to have diversity and equity in school leadership. It is MORE important to make sure that those leaders are QUALIFIED to do their job. It is not fair to anyone to have poor leadership due to under qualified or inexperienced personnel.
Eventually you're going to have to do something about teacher pay. We can't hold onto talent if we can't pay them enough to live. Poor teacher pay disproportionately affects minority teachers. This is a big problem.
Another problem is if we don't fix retention. How can we promote people into leadership if they stop teaching after 5 years?
Diversity includes everyone- not just race or ethinixity...but abilities and neurodiversity.
You have to do more than hire. Diversity isn’t the answer. Inclusion and belonging are. If teachers of color don’t feel welcome and included then it doesn’t matter how diverse your staff is.
Diversity usually starts at the local school. In my district, most of the curriculum people and the higher ups in the central office are White and a majority of them taught in White and Asian schools when they were teachers. If you want to diversify the top positions, you have to ensure that minorities have the same opportunities to get hired in White and Asian schools. A lot of teaching is about perspective, not reality. So if many minorities come from a low SES school where test scores are low, they probably will not move up, although they could have been an awesome teacher.
Why is that a priority?
Because it’s important for students to see diverse faces and experiences reflected among the staff, and especially important when considering certain issues. All teachers can advocate for all students, but a Hispanic teacher may be more atuned to the specific cultural needs of Hispanic students, etc.
I'm confused... do you mean corporate leadership or school leadership? I think there also needs to be more racial diversity at the teacher level
