I’m not trying to rain on your parade, I’m sure there are some that are better than others. But before any real answers to your question come in... I just wanted to say that I don’t think it matters.
The smallest community college with no advertising program to the most prestigious IV league advertising masters program... every college or university can produce a great future in advertising.
This probably wasn’t pertinent information to the root of your query, but I just had to throw it out there.
Not bitter at all, huh?
I wouldn’t go to undergrad for advertising. If you want to be a strategist, study economics, business, philosophy, English, anthropology, and/or human computer interaction. I’d go to a school that has a strong alumni network in NYC or LA and then double in two of the above majors.
If you must do advertising in undergrad, I’d look at UT Austin.
Syracuse, Northwestern, VCU
University of Oregon is great — a lot of alumni/connections at W+K too.
I’d add University of Texas - Austin to the list as well
+1 for Newhouse at Syracuse (I’m biased, it’s my alma mater)
UW Madison has a really robust strat com program in the J School that encompasses advertising but also a little bit of strat, art, copy and true journalism. I also heard they’re now teaching digital media & analytics.
UT Austin, VCU, Oregon. I went to CU Boulder and found it really good and prepared me well. I know some people say it doesn’t matter but good programs will often have you work with local real clients which helps a lot with case studies and having an actual portfolio!
studied advertising at a state school and have had friends/colleagues in similar positions who went to IV leagues. it’s really about how much you want it and how hard you’re willing to work in the first few years of your career.
tbh, thinking back on it, advertising professors are people who couldn’t make it in the field. their teachings provided little to no real life guidance.
University of Illinois At Urbana Champaign has a good program if you want to work in account management.
Carnegie Mellon
Thanks all! Trying to help out a family friend.
I have a communications and art history degree from a state school I barely graduated from and I’m doing just fine.
