In your school district, who is responsible for writing IEP goals for a student who is graduating from 8th to 9th- the middle school teacher or the high school teacher? I ask bc I wrote some IEP behavior goals for a student who's going to hs next year and the high school responded with, "we don't do that here". OK, so are you going to write them?

The middle school writes the IEP and the goals are part of the IEP. If the high school can't meet the goals, then it is up to them to amend the IEP once the student is in high school. That said, we try to find out what services and programs are offered in the high schools and work within those parameters. Our communication isn't as good with the elementary schools, probably because there are a lot of them. They frequently write social skill goals that we are unable to meet in the middle school setting because we don't have a resource room.


Our department chairs attend middle school ARDs for incoming 9th graders so the IEP can be aligned with how sped operates on the high school level.


Our HS team got together a month ago and decided what needed to be addressed, and came up with an outline of problematic goals.

The MS writes the IEP, after consultation with the HS, and HS teacher is invited to the IEP.


Then HS amends it once the student gets there, if needed.


I would think this question should be easily answered by your district SPED office, and their direction should be followed by all schools involved. Personally, I think if a goal is justifiable then the school should have to do whatever the team determines is best for the student.


“We don’t do that here” is really not an option. If it is written in the IEP, it needs to be implemented. “We don’t do that here” won’t work in a court of law, either. Hang in there, and keep writing goals that are appropriate for your students and their needs.... keep up the great work 😊


“We don’t do that here” is absolutely relevant. I talk to their current teachers to write relevant IEP goals for high school. HS has a different schedule, different level of supervision and different expectations.


The MS IEP/SE teacher writes the goals. (I imagine that a IEP could be created in a meeting that includes the MS and HS, given your district allots time and resources for such).

Should be completed through vertical articulation with both levels involved in the planning. Cannot tell you how many math goals or AR goals that I need to inform parents that they are not part of the HS curriculum.

It's the teams decision on what the goals should be. Before writing behavioral goals, I would suggest completing an up to date FBA. From that data you should be able to come up with some appropriate goals.

Looking for advice on a situation where a new teacher used IEP and ETR data directly (copied and pasted literally word for word) from a previous IEP/ETR directly to her IEP without adding present level data. She went so far as to keep many of the same goals from the previous year that the student mastered as well.

This was all after the IEP fell out of compliance and was a month overdue. I feel like the district and family should be aware.

Does anyone have experience with related service providers wanting to discontinue services because the student is no longer making progress? In my eyes this is absolutely not a good reason! I would never discontinue a reading program because a student isn’t making progress - I would work my butt off to find a solution. Is it different with OT and PT?
