I teach kindergarten and use lots of PBIS strategies. When we were virtual last year I redid my incentives so I could use them virtually. Keep in mind the timeframe and rigor was pretty relaxed in the spring. Here are some I used most often:
- when students uploaded their work, or revised/edited their writing, they earned a star on the star chart. 3 stars meant you got to pick your reward.
- choose a song (on GoNoodle)
- choose a book (sometimes I read, sometimes student read, sometimes YouTube read aloud)
- name in lessons (I use their name in our daily sentence and word problem.
- choose what’s next (this was their fave) they get to choose the order of what we do during our synchronous time
- be the whiteboard - the kids get to use markers to highlight the date or a special word we’re looking at in phonics or when reading. They hold their notebooks to the screen and I spotlight them so everyone can see
- share a creation - they get to share something they created, a cool LEGO build, work they’re proud of, a picture they made, etc.
These worked very well for me last year. Hope they help you too! Good luck!
Love these ideas! Must borrow
Make it a game with points, leaderboards, and teams. Have teacher’s create achievements for students like logging in so many times a week, attending so many zoom meetings, turning in assignments early, or helping a fellow student. Hidden fun activities that unlock when you get through your daily work. Things like that. This works for all ages as long as the rewards are catered to the age.
Ooo and grade level or school wide challenges. See if you can get local businesses to sponsor giving something like ice cream gift certificates for a virtual ice cream party for the winning class at each grade.
Earning badges that they can cash in for real things. Also, I know kids love outfitting and designing their avatar!
We use PBIS rewards an app that allows the students to accumulate points and cash them in for prizes. They can also earn badges and certificates for awards ceremonies.
I purchase the prizes and items my self and scan and qr code the students have on their desks to add points or using my phone to add points at the end of the week/9 weeks the cash in their points for prizes. Hope this helps :) 😃
Rising Star
You can create Google forms, but then you're doing it for each student. That's not timely. What about remind app? Not sure what it does, when my son's teachers used it I had a flip-phone, so never used it. Also, consult with your representative for your school's electronic gradebook, I think we can send messages, post work, as well as enter grades. It also connects with Google classroom and you can email parents from there along with students. Good luck!
