India elected first Women Prime Minister in 1966, it took 44 more years for America to elect first Women as a Vice President. Proud moment but still a long way to go. Can’t wait!

Ok ok don’t go there. Nobody after that right? Also More importantly how women’s issues are been dealt currently in both countries is more significant. India has long ways to go in terms of gender equality. Btw this is Indian male thinking out loud here

like

I agree there is gender inequality and its upon all our generation to make things better.

like

Agree with others. It’s not about checking a box. Many countries have had female leaders , with horrible gender inequality records. Let’s see if this becomes a norm or stays a “historical” checkpoint like India. Or like Obama is at the moment for African Americans. It is a great moment regardless.

But we also didn’t elect another woman since then 🤷‍♀️

SA1 - yes. Son of a Parsi and father of a Janeudhari Brahmin 🤣

When women in India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh can wear what they want, live with who they want, do what they want, and love who they want with no fear to personal security or societal pressure - that’s when we would have achieved similar progress.

Agreed! This respect and equality needs to begin at home

like

OP - that PM you are referring to was just pure nepotism. We have not really “elected” anyone yet

People didn’t vote for her ?

That was a PM’s daughter. This one is an educated immigrants daughter

Not just India. Every so called third world country along with India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Srilanka eleccted women as their supreme leaders looking time ago.

Gandhi is no comparison to the woman elected by the US. If Kamala Harris commits genocide against a minority in the US you can start comparing. Gandhi was trash. Never forget 1984.

Russian intelligence? They were close with Gandhi, discussing potentially taking india to communism. Anything coming from this "research" is questionable, as are most "facts" published by indian gov in relation to the entire situation. They have their own agenda. Of course they were armed, they built their arsenal in response to the rumored attacks. The attacks were planned before bhindranwale and his followers started staying at akal takht. Your cause/effect is reversed. Imagine - if someone has "anti-tank guns" and a tank never shows up....why does it even matter? The group militarized in response to what the government had already planned. They were not using civilians as shields. Sikhism is a warrior religion from its origin. Sikhs did not have an issue with Bhindranwale staying at the akal takht. The military coming in and blowing everything up is the issue. India historically does not have an issue with Sikh religion and its emphasis on fighting for what is right WHEN IS BENEFITS INDIA. Im not the hypocrite here. If you admit there were human rights violations, why is that not enough to say what Gandhi did was wrong? It WAS racist. You need to look into the goal behind woodrose. It was ethnic cleansing. It is racist. Going forward, indian gov labeled ANY sikh a terrorist, encouraging violence against them. The US never labeled all muslims in the US terrorists and encouraged civilian mobs to attack them, or distributed addresses of Muslim residences and businesses to give the mobs locations to attack. That is what happened in india. Gandhi did NOT have a reason to respond/do what she did. If the goal was to detain Bhindranwale, again, he was not hiding. Her goal was to crush the sikh spirit. Please explain how her response that included attacking other gurdwarey on that day served any purpose other than to instill fear? Please explain operation woodrose. You have provided no history lesson. You are angry (throwing f bombs isnt helping you) and i truly wonder why. Sikh people had to leave their homes, become refugees, lost their loved ones, DIED in this attack, they have every right to be mad. Do you have a perspective behind your anger you'd like to share? Truly curious how/why anyone will argue Gandhi is worth backing up at this point.

Nehru helped Indira take on Party leadership then. He blocked all candidates.

When you have a surname Gandhi, Bhutto or Rehman is it women's rights or nepotism that is getting you to that position?

like

It can be both... traditionally nepotism only passed down titles & property to the son. So good that is has expanded to daughters as well. Now if we could only eliminate it entirely...

Hmm I think people even voted for Sonia Gandhi in 2004. The seat went to MMS though.
