Dems would trade it in a heartbeat for that or for broader election reform. The truth is the GOP really doesn’t care about voter ID and they know it’s not an issue, but it’s a drum they beat because it energizes their base. It feeds their broader narrative of the big lie and the dems need to cheat to win and widespread fraud and dead people voting and vote by mail fraud and etc etc. GOP has more value in feeding this narrative and controlling elections however they can rather than give the dems what they want.

D1 - The VP didn't go along with it, so I'll give him that. Many House and Senate R's were 100% on board and complicit, actively working with Trump, Meadows, etc. Those that weren't directly involved are complicit for their failure to stand up and have a backbone. The few that have stood up have been ostracized if they haven't completely walked back their claims and gravelled at Trump's feet. Multiple state legislatures were also involved, in coordination with Meadows and Trump. Arizona, Michigan, Wisconsin, and more, all sent fraudulent separate "official" slates of electors certificates to DC. This is a party wide issue. This is an all R thing, except for the onesie or twosies who have firmly opposed it who have basically been cast outside of the party. This is the republican party. This is their number one issue. It is their main message.
Because both sides are dominated by fanatics and fanatics would rather keep the other side from winning than win themselves. Neither one is willing to be the better person. You can always spot a fanatic by their insistence than it’s only the other side’s fault.
Any policy that pushes for no picture ID to vote should be shot down unequivocally. It’s truly stunning that this is even up for debate. What other explanation could dems have besides fraud for wanting to make it easier to cheat in voting? It’s absurd. There are aspects to the dems proposal that DO make sense; such as the national holiday etc. But anything that gets rid of ID requirements is insane

Because the R’s are only acting like they care, but their voting record shows quite clearly the opposite. They aren’t interested in making a deal because any bipartisan deal is a win for both sides, which means a win for Democrats, and Republicans can’t have Democrats be any semblance of a winner in order for their agenda to pass. So obstruction and bad faith deal making is their game.

A holiday for election day would do nothing to help healthcare workers, first responders, single parents, the self-employed, the disabled, or the elderly. It's a 19th century solution for a 21st century problem.
