In-house counsel - would you prefer working at a big company specializing in a field of law, eg, privacy, IP, employment, etc, or a small company being a general counsel? Assume the small company has a higher risk of going under compared to the big company, but higher reward (via stock), and the large company pays a healthier salary.

Big company but it’s not about the comp or the stability. I prefer the work and the culture. I was at a promising but oft struggling company before and the culture was very toxic.

Big company for sure. But I’m highly specialized and love my specialty. I would be nothing but stressed as a GC where everything from HR to litigation to compliance to contracts were all my job. Some people thrive on that though. I’m also more risk averse and like the stability of a bigger company and higher pay.

Real estate finance. I can’t really work at most companies, lol. But some banks/non-bank lenders are options.

I have done both, and they both have their pros and cons. It’s really about what you prefer.

Well, what do you like more? How's the budget for outside counsel and building the legal team and the reporting lines at smallerco? Do you like building things and managing people and hiring and legal ops? Do you like working with execs? Do you want to work like a nutter? Do you believe in the mgmt team of smallerco?

Just trying to get a sense of what the average attorney likes. I’m at a big co, wondering about small co life but honestly don’t know what I want.

Just depends on where you’re happiest ‘working.’ All the incentives in the world won’t overcome a lack of personal fulfillment.

Curious about first year comp for partners in single equity tier firms. Would be interesting to get some input from folks who have a sense of what that looks like based on what they’ve seen at their own firms. At my firm, it’s around 600 with bonuses for billings and originations, and steps up pretty quickly. If you know how it works at your firm, please post so we can get a sense of what the market looks like.

Hello everyone, I have an initial screen with a recruiter this week for a role on the AWS ISV partner sales team. What level can I expect this to be at (I’m not familiar with the L5s, L6s etc. leveling), what salary range is reasonable for that level (OTE, base and commissions)? I’m in NYC/10 YOE.

How does $19,500 401k participant contribution limit differ from $57,000 defined contributions limit (all sources, employee + employer)?

In addition to pre-tax, I do post-tax 401k contributions. And I see online they “some plans allow employee to make after-tax contributions once the 2020 $19.5k contribution limit is hit, up to limit of $57k”

So once I hit the $19.5k, I can do up to $57k (including employee contributions), but in excess of $19.5 needs to be post tax. Correct?

Third-year in BL and just had a second round of interviews for an in-house position. It was surprisingly similar to a law firm callback with no real curveballs. They mentioned that as in-house counsel, you have to answer questions that you don’t always know the answer to. Frickin, how does that work without you committing malpractice, especially if you’re still a “baby attorney”? By just using lots of qualifiers in your answer? What happens if you get it wrong (hopefully not instant termination)
