Injured my knee playing hoops, had to pay $700 for an MRI today. Is our insurance that shitty that it doesn't cover 100% or has health cost gone up a shit ton?

the high deductible plans have a lot lower premiums... And even $50/paycheck is $2600/year, which is probably more than your deductible. plus you get an HSA which Uncle D adds some money into. You can plot healthcare costs vs. amount out of pocket including premiums, deductibles, and out of pocket maximums, and for someone who doesn't expect large healthcare costs the extra risk of a high deductible plan is pretty negligible (for us there wasn't a scenario where we paid so much more out of pocket with the high deductible plan than the all-inclusive to make up for the premium difference)

Yeah, don't remember the math exactly, but for a family it basically works out that HDHP premiums are like $2500/year with a $4500 out of pocket maximum, or Aetna is like $6000/year but you don't really pay anything out of pocket (maybe a couple hundred in copays if you use it heavily). The deciding factor is D gives you $1000 in your HSA with the HDHP. So in the worst case with the high deductible plan you pay the same as what your premiums are with the top line Aetna, but if you don't use it much you bank the difference.

We have like 10 options that span the entire range of premium/coverage. Read the plan descriptions in November this year instead of just taking the default

like

I've never heard of a plan that covers 100% for special scans and testing unless it's standard preventative care or you have a dope ass open access plan. Did you read your plan terms?

like

You probably haven't hit your deductible for the year? Essentially you have to pay 100% of expenses until you hit a certain amount (couple k's)

like

This what HSA's are for

like

Pretty standard actually, Obamacare has really caused deductibles / co-pays to raise

like

... Ass1 😂😂😂

like

Ass1, explain your very broad statement. Did you enroll in an Obamacare plan, switching from an employer provided plan? That would explain your particular copays and deductibles going up. Otherwise, I have seen no research backing up your claim. In fact, that just doesn't follow the economics of how obomacare impacts other private insurance plans.

like

OP you might want to do some research on how medical insurance works.

like

Aetna for us is the best plan .... I had two MRI taken and first was $100 and second was completely covered by insurance

Was honestly just wondering if it was normal, so thanks to everyone who actually provided some info. Young guy, single and I try to eat healthy and workout often so I always pick the default option. This knee injury was a freak thing but will definitely read up on our plans next year

like

The default option will always have more upfront costs for care, but less monthly costs. The BCBS ppo will cover specialist care like that. Depends on what you want, but you really should know your options

like

$700 seems excessive though even if insurance doesn't cover 100%. I've had them recently, and they came out somewhere between $100-$200 after insurance.

like

Our plan is $5 for anything, all the way up to artificial insemination, kinda nuts.

like

@P5, Deductible plans don't cover any of the billed cost of tests/scans/procedures before you max the deductible and copay, unless it's a part of preventative. So that's sticker price for the scan.

like

I have Aetna - copays for meds and standard doctor visits might be higher than some, but insurance picks it up when it counts. I had an ER visit with an X-Ray and ultrasound that resulted in surgery last year and only ended up paying $150 out of pocket.

like

Company's = copays

Depends on your coverage I have Atnea and a funded FSA, haven't spent any extra money this year.

I am preparing myself to get into this role by trying to connect with TPM’s via LinkedIn, looking into posts/YouTube videos for interviews etc. Also applying for the roles simultaneously.

Looking for some guidance/help..

Industry vets - in your experience how recession proof is insurance? I was not yet in the job market last recession but I watched my mom get laid off and struggle to find employment during that time for the next 1.5 years. I was wanting to hit the job market towards the end of this year, but now I worry that if I do move companies, the recession could put me in position of last one hired first one fired. Is it better to stay put?

Any tips on how to keep my plate full with work? I just moved from civil legal services to Biglaw as a staff attorney (9 YOE), and I’m looking for strategies on how to get work from partners. They know I’m new and I have gotten some matters to work on, but I find myself out of billable work by the afternoon (and today, by 10am). I check in with different people each day to ask if there are things I can work on, but what else can I be doing (that isn’t going to annoy the shit out of ppl)? TIA!
