Insight into Kirkland M&A (Chicago)? Heard they were allowing permanent WFH, anyone hear this? What are *real* hours requirements (I.e, what kind of hours are associates really pulling)? How are associates treated?

I interviewed there and I had an associate look me dead in the eye and say “do not work here”. So there’s that.

Amazing

I’m just here for the K&E stories 😎

Just no to Kirkland. They're aggressively d_ckish if you're on the other side, fratty, long writeup in Businessweek in the past year re "partner" at 6th year not being what it's cracked up to be, my friends there (not Chicago) are exhausted and miserable, and firms I've worked at received a steady stream of ex-Kirkland refugees. They may pay good bonuses and have a good concierge service, but that is about all the nice stuff my friends can muster. Oh, and I have a good friend who was sexually harassed there so they let her stick around for years as a NEP. So...it has that going for it?

I don’t, nor have I ever, worked there. The only information I have is hearsay from a bunch of ex-K&E attorneys I work with and friends I have there. I’ll keep it simple: if you want to get paid, are ok always being available 24/7, working insane hours on end, and having really no real prospects for partnership unless you are someone’s favorite (which is likely a matter of luck than hard work), then yeah go for it. If your looking for a warm and fuzzy place to go, don’t do it. You will, however, get great training, work on some huge deals, and can form some really good relationship that will pay dividends once (sorry, if) you lateral out since some of the “small” matters they turn down can be enormous at other places. Again, I don’t work there and, TBH, only take advice from those who have so they can tell you how it really is, but you want to talk to the PE associates and you should probably call them (because they are working and likely not reading this).

I just rejected a position from Kirkland’s m&a practice. Before interviewing everyone told me it was a sweatshop and not to do it. The one associate I met from Chicago was super friendly and laid back and I liked him. Generally the people seemed like smart, hard workers and they made a point of telling me they didn’t “kill themselves” with work. Also alot of women partners which I liked. Definitely wasn’t the terrible vibe everyone was telling me (although this was in interview process so who knows). But I rejected because another firm offered me better pay and more flexibility in assignments and I just got along better with the other firm’s attorneys. Nothing seemed terrible about the Kirkland group.

Also feel free to dm me if you want logistics of how the interview process worked and what they told me about hours, work assignments , etc

Interested to hear whether K&E is willing to offer real WFH flexibility going forward. That could be a game changer.

A7 - the recruiter I’m working with just placed a couple people out of Columbus Ohio to work remote out of the Chicago office, so it appears to be a real thing. I also put my resume in and submitted my materials with the up front consideration that I want to be remote full time.l and now have an interview. I’m really excited about the opportunity!

Sarkis is awesome (used to work for him at Cravath (but he's in NY, not Chicago)!

A7 - thanks for the insight. My firm also has an open assignment system and I also find that it creates an environment where I get to work with people I like and get to know everyone’s work styles and preferences. I agree that it makes for a much more pleasant working environment and makes the long hours a whole lot easier to manage!

Netflix, Stripe and Slack seem appealing. But honestly, mainly because of the pay and prestige.
