Get an Airbnb for sure. We used a stroller that could recline all the way, put her in PJs, wrapped her in a blanket, walked around until she went to sleep and then we hung out at a cafe or bar with her. Transferred her to her cot when we got back. Best vacation ever! Bonus is she will sleep absolutely anywhere now.
Some people swear by just baby wearing them all evening while they sleep but I never felt like I could relax that way.
Definitely do it - we took a long vacation around then and it was so worth it!!
We know we can do stuff out and about during the day with Baby, but a night, we’re kind of stuck in the room once Baby goes to bed (around 6:30). Any advice/tips on how to spend our evenings? Can’t take a sitter/nanny at this point, but I’m considering it for the future!
I'd recommend one of those strollers which pull back all the way down to create a flat bed for the baby to sleep. We did that with our son when he was one and he slept through out night walks, shopping , dining and even near Niagara falls. I would think your baby is little so it will even be easier because they like rocking and all that noise which reminds them of mom. Just Carry a favorite blankie for her and a cover up for the stroller so it is dark and cozy for her
Portable sound machine/white noise app like Rain Rain on your phone. I put it on and place the phone near the headrest of the stroller so it helps keep baby asleep while we're out and about. We have an UppaBaby stroller that reclines almost flat and an awning/shade helps make it dark and cozy.
There's always a chance baby will wake up but for me, I'd rather deal with schedule being off and enjoy the vacation than be trapped in a hotel room in the dark and lose 5 hours of the day. Haven't done international trips but have done this on vacations to beach and other cities.
Get a suite hotel or stay at an air bnb. We learned the hard way.
The stroller suggestion is really good. We also have the UppaBaby that reclines, so we should be set to get started. Such a simple solution... I’m actually excited now!
Thank you for your help!
How long are you going? With jet lag, we always keep our kids up much later in Europe, which works out well for doing things in the evenings. When we put them to bed at their normal (time zone adjusted) bedtimes, they’d wake up for hours in the middle of the night which makes everyone miserable the next day!
So they’d sleep like 11pm-10am the first night, 10:30-9:30 the second, etc. Typically for us they’re adjusted fully to local time after 10-12 days if you’re staying that long, otherwise you could keep him/her slightly closer to home time in general. This also makes the return jet lag better
We went to Italy with our 4/5 month old. She slept in her car seat while we went out for dinner. Italians eat later, so with the time zone change and all of the stimulation during the day, we could usually get a nice meal and a walk in. I agree with the AirBnB recommendations... we bought meats, cheeses, wine, appetizer types of snacks and would do a happy hour on the balcony in the afternoons while our daughter took a nap that wasn’t on-the-go. I also agree with the baby wearing recommendation... the ergo allowed her to see and for us to navigate non-stroller friendly surfaces. That’s how we climbed the bell tower and dome of the duomo in Florence!
