Inspired by another post: we are taking a vacation to Italy with our five month old, and I’m looking for suggestions on how to handle evenings when normally Baby goes to bed.

Get an Airbnb for sure. We used a stroller that could recline all the way, put her in PJs, wrapped her in a blanket, walked around until she went to sleep and then we hung out at a cafe or bar with her. Transferred her to her cot when we got back. Best vacation ever! Bonus is she will sleep absolutely anywhere now.

Some people swear by just baby wearing them all evening while they sleep but I never felt like I could relax that way.

Definitely do it - we took a long vacation around then and it was so worth it!!

We know we can do stuff out and about during the day with Baby, but a night, we’re kind of stuck in the room once Baby goes to bed (around 6:30). Any advice/tips on how to spend our evenings? Can’t take a sitter/nanny at this point, but I’m considering it for the future!

I'd recommend one of those strollers which pull back all the way down to create a flat bed for the baby to sleep. We did that with our son when he was one and he slept through out night walks, shopping , dining and even near Niagara falls. I would think your baby is little so it will even be easier because they like rocking and all that noise which reminds them of mom. Just Carry a favorite blankie for her and a cover up for the stroller so it is dark and cozy for her

like

Portable sound machine/white noise app like Rain Rain on your phone. I put it on and place the phone near the headrest of the stroller so it helps keep baby asleep while we're out and about. We have an UppaBaby stroller that reclines almost flat and an awning/shade helps make it dark and cozy.
There's always a chance baby will wake up but for me, I'd rather deal with schedule being off and enjoy the vacation than be trapped in a hotel room in the dark and lose 5 hours of the day. Haven't done international trips but have done this on vacations to beach and other cities.

Get a suite hotel or stay at an air bnb. We learned the hard way.

The stroller suggestion is really good. We also have the UppaBaby that reclines, so we should be set to get started. Such a simple solution... I’m actually excited now!

Thank you for your help!

How long are you going? With jet lag, we always keep our kids up much later in Europe, which works out well for doing things in the evenings. When we put them to bed at their normal (time zone adjusted) bedtimes, they’d wake up for hours in the middle of the night which makes everyone miserable the next day!
So they’d sleep like 11pm-10am the first night, 10:30-9:30 the second, etc. Typically for us they’re adjusted fully to local time after 10-12 days if you’re staying that long, otherwise you could keep him/her slightly closer to home time in general. This also makes the return jet lag better

We went to Italy with our 4/5 month old. She slept in her car seat while we went out for dinner. Italians eat later, so with the time zone change and all of the stimulation during the day, we could usually get a nice meal and a walk in. I agree with the AirBnB recommendations... we bought meats, cheeses, wine, appetizer types of snacks and would do a happy hour on the balcony in the afternoons while our daughter took a nap that wasn’t on-the-go. I also agree with the baby wearing recommendation... the ergo allowed her to see and for us to navigate non-stroller friendly surfaces. That’s how we climbed the bell tower and dome of the duomo in Florence!

My wife and I are having a baby at the end of the month. I recently found out that my company provides PTO for 6 weeks. I had checked the benefits earlier And the leave was unpaid. I had originally planned on taking 2 weeks off, but now my wife expects me to take the full 6. I want to take the full 6, but I feel a weird attachment to my job and I don’t want to put my career in jeopardy. On the other hand it’s my first child, and I want to be an involved father. Am I wrong for feeling this way?

Hello People,
Looking for advice based on experience. Currently living with in-laws that have come to support us with our first baby. My in-laws and I have had a rocky start to our relationship due to ours being an inter-religion marriage. Many things have been said that I’m neither able to forgive nor forget. I have a very kind husband who understands my sentiments but wants to try to have a cordial relationship with them now for the sake of our baby (and baby’s relationship with grandparents)

I’m really happy being gf&bf with my significant other - I’m 41 and I don’t want kids and I am not desperately seeking marriage. I’m really happy with just this & my job. I think it weirds his immigrant family out a lot. His mother apparently was very cold/rude to his ex-gf (I found this out bc I asked) and his sister is very cold and has a very judgmental attitude about women that don’t wanna be a wife & have kids (just like her.) I wanna avoid holidays at their place - any advice?

My Sr manager asked if i had any plans for Easter/our 3 day weekend and i said yeah we go to my grandmother and grandaddy's house for the holiday usually and he said "grandaddy? What is that his pimp name?" This is what happens when you have northerners transfer to a southern office 😭

Question: what are the chances to get re-hired after a year if you leave your job for 1 year to move to a different country to take care of your spouse who is having mental health problems? My husband works abroad and with the travel ban he is unable to come to UK. He needs me over there but my company doesn’t have an office in his country with roles open. And I’m not fluent in the local language.

Hello fellow HR pros! I really need your opinions on HR certifications. I am deciding between PHR and SHRM-cp. I have read just about all there is online comparing the two and can not decide. My heart is telling me PHR, my mother in law (an HRBP) is telling me to go with SHRM, as it’s more widely recognized, more established and a larger network in general. I work for a 350~ company who is growing rapidly through M&A. Passions/interests are compliance, strategic vision, M&A, branding and culture

What would u do in this "hypothetical" scenario.
1. Student gets 95 percentile on standardized tests in 1st grade.
2. 2nd gr teacher, capable and flexible but a little old school.
3. Parent, from foreign country, wants us to teach 2 years ahead of where student is at in math and reading in case they have to return to other country.
4. District's old standard for acceleration is at the 97th+ percentile and other students are much more"advanced".
5. Parent wants detailed steps for teacher's plan

I know this has been discussed but can’t find exactly what I’m after... How much is too much money to negotiate? Negotiate for more money and more PTO or just one. Both are low, especially the PTO

Quitting before finalizing offers?

I’m at post onsite and negotiation stage at a couple places but it may take another month or 2 due to either hiring freezes or general slow processes.

I want to quit now to go on vacations that I held off during prep. Does it make much difference when I negotiate offers? Like if my upcoming unvested RSU would be (partially) matched, and they find out I quit somehow, is it no longer matched? Other potential snags?

Already burned most of my PTO interviewing.

Mother has a decent nest egg ($3M) and lives in an extremely LCOL area. Currently manages money through RBC, however the fees are a gross operating expense of 0.36%. What do you all recommend? I’m not savvy enough to manage it myself however I know that fees can stack up and kill returns. Would appreciate any insight/advice/snark.

Recently promoted. Managing 4 direct reports, which essentially means I’m managing an entire department (it’s small company). Offered a 10% increase, which according to my research is low. Also know for a fact that 2 peers were offered 15% right off the bat, even though I’m technically more senior than they are. Live in NYC, 8 years of experience at the company and in total (first job out of college). I’m being told that there is no chance of negotiating further. Am I being taken advantage of?

Any Operations Manager for a Amazon warehouse in New Jersey ? How much do you guys get paid monthly/yearly. Before & after taxes? The Company screwed me on my salary and told me not to negotiate the price with them. Out of ignorance I didn’t negotiate. But now I fear what I make isn’t enough to sustain me. I’m looking forward a Promotion to L5 then L6. For the L5 Area managers how much do you guys get paid yearly salary/ monthly after and before taxes not including bonuses.
