Insurance defense attorneys: how long does it take you to bill 9 hours a day? We have an average 9 hour a day billing requirement. I’m new to billing and trying to get the hang of it. Tips appreciated

9 hours a day??!! Unless you’re making 3-5 court appearances in the morning and can bill 1-2 hours for each one (which ain’t kosher, btw), how does anyone bill 9 hours a day unless you’re working 12+? Run. And fast. Even at the worst firm I ever worked for our target was 6, but most did 7-8.

I’m an M&A associate and I usually bill 8-9 hours per day. Firm expects at least 8. What do you do/what size firm?

...is this serious? To be clear, what you're stating here works out to a 2700 hour minimum, assuming no vacation and a 5-day work week. ETA: also, not in ID, but my tip is to find a new job

I’ve done basically all ID for the last few years, and I would say at least 10.5 hours to get to 9 billable. Echoing what everyone said above about billing every email, 5 min spent prepping for a call, reviewing efile notifications, etc. Those .1’s can really add up.

likesmarthelpful

Insurance defense attorneys value bill to get to high numbers. For example, .2 for an email that took you 15 seconds to read. A MSJ billed 4 hours even if it took you 6 hours the first time, and 2 hours the second time.

like

At the beginning, probably takes 13-15 hours. After a couple years you can knock it down to 10-11.

helpful

Isn’t that a 2400 hour yearly requirement?

smart

Whew, that’s high. I’m hoping you get decent vacation with that sort of daily requirement. We have an 8.5 standard and it’s tough some days. You have to keep track of every. Single. Little. Thing, every email, every docket search, or you will never get there on a given day. Figure out a system that works for you, whether it’s notes or online or mobile entry, using the timer or not, etc.

like

I feel your pain. ID with that kind of "requirement." There are some months where I am close, but usually, I fall short. It hasn't been an issue thus far, but I also haven't seen a bonus because of it.

like

We're Plaintiff's side (insurance) so mostly contingency but I still have to keep track of time spent. I have a SUPER old school boss who is a 9-5:30 type of guy...as in be here all of that time and be be billing at least 6.5-8 hours a day (nope not joking). My billed day yesterday was 7.6 hours. I account for everything with billing. Emails, to do list for a case, etc. Going to the bathroom...I am usually thinking about the special interrogatories/motion for protective order/etc. I'm working on so that timer keeps going. BILL EVERYTHING. I do take the occasional 5-10 min break which isn't billed (and where I post to things like fishbowl). This is not a fun way to work but you get used to it. Just turn that timer on first thing in the a.m.

like

Don’t go to lunch very often, be efficient with forms and previous drafts, count every email and call you make and take… capture all of your time. I worked 8-6 most days and could usually bill between 9-11 depending on the day…. It is not always easy and doable though if you have non billable requirements to do… there is a reason ID has a high burn out/ turn over rate.
