Don’t give up and don’t rely on applying only. Network, attend events with people you want to meet in the right places, and talk to multiple recruiters. Cast a wide net.

M&A in-house gigs at strategic acquirers are hard to get, even for folks with top credentials. But the reason the folks with top credentials tend to land those roles is because they had a connection, typically through their firm. In other words, if you can finagle a connection through other means, you can level the playing field by quite a bit. On a different note, have you considered going in-house at a buy-side firm client? I assume given your description that would mean a PE or vulture shop. The substantive work can be pretty similar, depending on the role. Those are also hard to get, but if the relationship partner likes you, and you’re already OK giving up on partnership, it might be worth setting up a conversation and being frank about your career goals. Of course that’s a major judgment call.

Evaluating an exit into Amazon as L6 product manager (TC: $225K) after 1 year at BCG. I want to work in tech/fintech long term. Questions: 1) Is the work life balance better at Amazon, than BCG? Currently I'm averaging 70 hours a week. More than that, the pace is quite insane. Deliverables every couple of hours. 2) Is the level of mentorship/coaching better at Amazon? 3) Is the offer reasonable? Their upper max is 250k and I'm currently at 240, should I try to atleast get my current TC?

I think (fingers crossed) that I am about to get a job offer for a management role. It would be a 45 percent pay increase and I honestly might be able to negotiate it to up to 55, but I just don’t feel excited about it. It’s a smaller company then where I am now, but still a decent size and great reputation, but the team is much smaller. I really want to be more excited because I know it’s a good opportunity. Any advice?
