Interested to hear your war stories - whatโ€™s the worst career advice youโ€™ve ever been given? I recently had someone tell me โ€œthe taller I can be, the betterโ€ ๐Ÿ˜ฑ Thanks, Iโ€™ll work on that ๐Ÿ˜‚

I literally had a manager tell me to not eat so healthy in front of the client (when I was trying to lose weight) because it may seem like I thought I was a better person ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜’๐Ÿ™„ LOL

My second week on a new project, someone pulled me aside and told me that A) I was โ€œtoo niceโ€ and โ€œtheyโ€™re going to walk all over you,โ€ and that B) I needed to stop saying the word โ€œawesome.โ€

Iโ€™m still nice and say โ€œawesomeโ€ a few years later, but it hasnโ€™t gotten me very far... so maybe it was good advice, after all ๐Ÿค”

My old manager told me not to quit my federal sector consulting job and move to SF to pursue tech consulting at a boutique b/c Iโ€™d soon realize how much harder my life would be and Iโ€™d grow to hate it. Also โ€œthe Bay Area is overrun by immigrants and crimeโ€... that last statement was enough to confirm I was hearing terrible advice

5 years later Iโ€™ve done some incredibly fulfilling work with some awesome clients and have exit ops I only would have dreamt of back then. Also, SF is a great place to live.

The height thing was tongue in cheek (studies have shown taller people are more successful, controlling for other factors)

The funniest advice i was given as a staff (and it was delivered to a mixed group of junior folks) was, โ€œif i were you, Iโ€™d get subscriptions to Wine Spectator and The Economist, and buy some Cole-Haans" ...

@M4 - I hear you. Thereโ€™s nothing better than being your real, actual self at work. The same clients, meetings, issues, etc can move from draining and miserable to enjoyable and engaging if you learn how to not have a different โ€œworkโ€ self.

When do partners decide when an associate is good enough to make partner? Iโ€™m a senior and it is extremely clear to me when an associate has it or doesnโ€™t, and moreover it doesnโ€™t take eight years to figure it out; it takes just one or two matters for me to know if theyโ€™re adding value or are ultimately just a commodity. Itโ€™s hard for me to avoid the conclusion that associates are largely being strung along by partners who are going to can them at some point, long after that decision is made.

Hi everyone,
I passed my PMP thanks to this sub group.
I have passed Above Target in the People section, and T in the other sections.
It was 95% situational questions.
Thave used AR's mock exams, and used my wrong answers to figure out my weakness and where I truly stand. I didn't purchase AR's course, just the mock exam simulator.
The 200 agile questions by David McLachlan were amazing, it really helped me in adapting to an agile mindset. TIA simulator n Joseph Phillip is useful.
